(FYI Kel-El is the character from Legion of Superheroes. He is a clone of Superman.)
Sapphire shot up in bed screaming. Her rapid breathing was not the only sign of troubled sleep. A resounding thud caused her to jump almost out of her skin.
“Its me Sapphire. Can I come in?” Kel-El asked from the other of the bedroom door.
“Sure,” Sapphire half heartedly said as she sat up. She began rubbing her face trying to wake up enough for a visitor. She heard the door slide open and close but not many steps into the room. “What can I do for you Kel?” Sapphire asked without looking up to met him.
“I heard you scream and wondered what was going on. Looks like you had another nightmare,” Kel-El observed from just inside the doorway.
“It was just a,” Sapphire began to say but surprisingly stopped as she finally looked up to see Kel-El. He was standing in her doorway in a dark blue pair of pajama pants. He had never walked around without changing into his uniform. Sapphire could not help herself as a smirk appeared on her face. “Were you on a late night kitchen raid when you stopped by or something?” Sapphire teased.
Kel-El crossed his arms. His face did not change at all from her comment.
Sapphire kept her little grin as she watched Kel-El’s reaction. It caused her to relax enough to lean backwards against the wall her bed was attached to. She turned her glance back to Kel-El. “You can come in further than that,” Sapphire said.
Kel-El only took a few steps into the room till he could lean against a cabinet. “So what have the nightmares been about? You seem to be having them a lot lately,” Kel-El still wondered.
“Wow. Have I been that noisy?” Sapphire asked in amazement as she remembered Kel-El sleeps a hallway and five bedrooms away.
“Superhearing,” Kel-El said to write off his coming. “Now what has caused all the nightmares for the past week?” Kel-El repeated.
Sapphire wrapped her arms around her legs as she sighed. “Its just the memories from the extermination campaigns I was used in,” Sapphire explained.
“Brainiac had you trapped for so long it isn’t surprising that you have nightmares from it,” Kel-El reasoned aloud. A motion caught his attention. Sapphire’s shoulders tightened as her head moved closer to her knees. “But that was a different lifetime. You aren’t that person anymore,” Kel-El tried suggesting.
“It is a part of me though. How can I ever make amends for being used to wipe out six planets?” Sapphire rambled as one of her hands waved back and forth in front of her.
A hand came on to her shoulder. She turned to look Kel-El in the face. The confidence he always carried was different this time. It was not simply how he carried himself. Something in his eyes said he truly believed his thoughts. “By helping me save the universe. When we stop Imperiex everything will be better. And I would not have anyone else help me,” Kel-El declared.
Sapphire’s leg slid down as she relaxed. Kel-El’s words eased her spirit. Her hands rested on the sheet. “Thank you Kel,” Sapphire said as a small smile came across her face.
“Now get some sleep. We have a lot of work to do,” Kel-El declared as his voice returned to its normal disgruntled tone. He began to walk out of Sapphire’s bedroom when a voice stopped him.
“Kel,” Sapphire softly said.
Kel-El turned back to Sapphire to see her coming toward him in an outfit he never imagined before. Her nightgown had thin straps barely covering her shoulders and the main body barely came pass her butt. The soft blue was a complete contrast to her normal dark blue outfits. Before he realized it Sapphire had come up next to him. Her fingers gently laid on his shoulder.
“I mean that Kel-El. Thank you,” Sapphire repeated in a soft tone. Nothing but warmth radiated from her being. She surprised Kel-El by kissing him on the cheek.
On its own his hand brushed against Sapphire’s side. “Get some sleep,” Kel-El calmly managed to say.
Sapphire’s smile reappeared on her face. “Ok. Good night Kel,” Sapphire said as she patted his shoulder. She turned back to her bed as he left the room.
Kel-El stopped outside the door and looked back. “Good night Sapphire. Have a pleasant dream.”
