Note: I am reposting this story from my other world, Beneath a Forest, which I sadly haven't updated since the end of July. I've also nominated this for publication, though I doubt it will be okayed. But, those negative thoughts aside, I do hope you enjoy this.

The sound of footsteps abruptly cut off Yin's train of thought. She whirled around to see the same strange girl whom she helped escape earlier standing before her. "What are you doing here?" Yin hissed. "If somebody sees you, they'll haul you off to execute you!" The girl twirled one of her crimson pigatils around her finger and smirked. "Don't worry. I'm not stupid, you know. I simply did what was necessary."
Yin leaned over the balcony and saw the mansion's guards oddly frozen in place, as if time was halted. She realized that the breeze had died and looked up at the trees. They were bent, as if swaying in the wind, but they didn't move. It then hit her like a bullet. Time had stopped.
"You don't know who I am," The girl behind her said playfully. Yin spun around. "No, I don't. So I ask,who are you?" The girl laughed. "Anya. I am also a shinigami. The shinigami who has the power over time, that is. I just proved that, did I not?"
"Anya," Yin spoke her name softly, though she did not know why. "Why are you here?"
"Well, I was cast out of the shinigami realm because I visited the human world too much. So now I am forced to wander this place for eternity... But that's not why I'm here."
"Why are you here?" Yin repeated, annoyed at Anya's impish attitude.
"My, you're an interesting human," Anya giggled. But, she suddenly stopped smiling and serious look crossed her face. "I am here because you helped me. If a human helps a shinigami, they get a wish, you know."
"A wish?"
"Of any kind. I can make the impossible within reach, your imagination become reality... Anything is possible, Yin."
Yin was slightly stunned at the fact that Anya knew her name. But, she thought, it is to be expected, for this girl was a shinigami. "I want to know the meaning of life," She replied flatly.
"Oooh, how interesting. A wish that is far beyond your years. All of the other humans who helped me wanted things like wealth and power. Well... since you wished it, it shall be done," Anya said, intrigued by the young child standing before her. "I will take you back in time. The meaning of life happened on a summer day like no other many years ago..."
"So that's it? You'll take me to that day and show me the meaning of life?" Yin asked, surprised that it seemed so simple. "No, I'm afraid not. You will not understand it if we did. We must go on a journey, to a different time, to a different place, long before these days of hatred and war," Anya replied. "Take my hand, and we will fly to a place where I can open the portal to that time without being seen by any other mortals."
Yin took hold of Anya's outstretched hand. The shinigami sprouted large, black, birdlike wings, and they rose into the air. Up, up, up, and over the treetops they went, out of sight, off to a place unknown to the human girl. Time started back at the mansion as soon as the two girls disappeared over the horizon, and everyone went about their business as if Yin, the daughter of the late Lady Ame, never existed.
