Chapter 1: The Art of Snowflakes
Saara watched as the first few snowflakes melted on the window’s glass, so delicate and white. She couldn’t help but smile a little. Snow always gave her a warm feeling inside, no matter how cold. But Deidara…
She sighed as she glanced over to where Deidara was sitting, stroking the fire with great care. His eyes would light up every time one of the firewood would crash and cause sparks to fly. Saara worried a little when he’d get his face so close to the fire that he would receive little ash marks on his face.
After a moment or two, her gaze met Noelle’s piercing blood red eyes; she was sitting in a green, comfy chair watching her. Saara jumped a little when Noelle’s eyes darting back and forth from her to Deidara, obviously trying to reach a point to her.
Saara felt the blood rush to her cheeks as she realized what Noelle had meant. Slowly, she nodded back and stood up from the window seal. She started to make her way over to the fireplace, glancing over her shoulder to find that Noelle had disappeared. Saara reached over and lightly tapped on Deidara’s shoulder.
Deidara jumped around and grabbed her wrist holding it too tight, making it close into a fist. His face was full of determination as he glared into her wide, holding-back eyes. Saara’s faced turned to darker shades of red as his breath tickled her lips and cheeks. Examining her, Deidara face relaxed, almost regretting what he had done.
“What, un?” Deidara asked, angry at himself for sounding cruel.
“I-I…” Saara was at lost for words. Everything began to spin. And for some odd reason, Deidara’s hair had looked like strands of gold. Her fingers twitched, trying to find a way to touch the unworldly hair. When she felt his grip loosen, she reached and grabbed a lock of hair with her finger tips.
Deidara amusedly watched her face relax as Saara gently played with his hair. Sure his hair was soft, but to Deidara, she looked completely out of it. Like everything had melted around them.
“S-Saara, hm?” Deidara asked. ‘Am I stuttering?’ he thought, letting go of her wrist.
Like awoken from a deep sleep, Saara gazed into Deidara’s eyes. She thought about how blue they were, but they looked almost sparkling with the fire blazing behind him. She wondered what they must look like when he created his art, blast of sparks and ashes flying around him, his face lighting up with joy….That is what true art is.
“Deidara I…” Saara began. She watched his face, she had been noticing that when his name past through her lips, he’d lit up with happiness. “Deidara, I was going to ask you if you wanted to go outside and watch the snow fall…”
Deidara face fell, just a tiny bit. “I don’t know, un. I never got used to the cold.” He began to remember the cold winter nights all alone in the orphanage, failing at creating the perfect art with such hazardous conditions.
“Oh…You could maybe….wear a jacket?” she suggest uneasily, unsure of his reaction.
Deidara thought about, balancing back and forth on his feet. A jacket? Jacket. It didn’t seem real, just a jacket? That could keep him from remembering the pain? But…He looked over Saara’s face again, she looked hopeful.
“O-Okay un. But whose jacket do I take hmm?” He agreed.
“You can borrow mine.”
Saara and Deidara turned to meet the voice. Noelle. She tossed over her coat, almost making Deidara trip. Saara had a feeling Noelle’s been watching them, and isn’t going to stop soon. As Deidara unscrambled himself, Saara glanced back at her, Noelle winked as she evaporated into thin air.
When she turned back to Deidara, he had the black leather jacket all zipped and buckled up. With studded black fingerless gloves, (Noelle: Must forgot them in the pockets *whistles and walks away*) Deidara looked…well….good.
Saara bravely grabbed his hand and led him outside into the wintery wonderland. But the moment they walked outside, the snow had stopped. In a pout, she walked him to the forest area. A red cardinal flew over their heads as they entered an opening.
Deidara let out a gasp as a newly made snowflake fluttered and landed on his nose. He reached up and touched it with his warm fingers, melting the innocent snowflake. He spread a fox like grin across his face, making Saara giggle.
The two spent the rest of the day playing in the snow, and not once did they stop holding hands.
Deidara carefully placed Saara against a tree. Their faces were almost touching, this time Saara wasn’t going to blush, Deidara placed his frozen fingers on her cheek. She didn’t wince under his touch, her whole body felt numb, Deidara’s did too.
“You know, we’d be warmer if we s-shared body heat, un.” Deidara suggested smoothly, smirking throughout the thought.
With out hesitation, Saara wrapped her arms around his neck and murmured, “You should be wearing a scarf…”
He pulled back a little to see her face better. “You know, this snow it almost like my art, un. It shows itself off before melted to the slightest touch of your skin. Like when my C-3 clay explodes, yeah.”
And with that, Deidara and Saara stared into each others’ eyes with comfort and faith. They slowly inched their numb lips toward the others’. And the kiss, sealed their love forever and ever.
