The Bells of the Death Note Ryu

A meeting was called. The details of L’s plan were successfully executed by Watari, and all was set in order. As L expected, all of the team gave reactions of disbelief. L didn’t care about any of this. He was waiting for Rem, who was not in the room. I’m supposed to die today… he thought.

Lightning struck the roof of the building, sending in a power cut. Mild panic entered the room. L remained still. This would be the time to do it…come on! Kill me!

Audible gasps emitted from the speaker that Watari spoke out of. L quickly focused on this. This wasn’t supposed to happen. What’s going on?

“Watari?”

All data deletion. The screens flashed this message, much to the grief of L. Shit! I didn’t think of that! They were only supposed to get me! L remained motionless, although he was clearly not as composed in his head. Watari is dead.

“Deletion of data? What is happening?”
“I instructed Watari to delete all the data if something were to happen to him.” Watari was dead. Only one being could have done that, and L could tell that the others were catching on.
“Where’s the Shinigami?”
“Now that you mention it…I can’t see her.”
“Wait! There she is!”

Everyone turned to Rem, who was standing there, Death Note in hand, staring at L in disbelief. L looked at Light, who was looking back and forth from Rem to L. L could see the panic in Light’s eyes, as his plan quickly went to waste.
“Why aren’t you dead?!” cried Light and Rem at the same time.

Got him.

The team looked at Light in shock, realizing what is about to happen to him. Chief Yagami was paralyzed. Those words coming out of his son’s mouth could only mean…

“…Light is Kira.” stated L clearly.

Silence dominated the room. An explanation for everything was the final piece in the puzzle.

“Light is Kira.” L said again. “He persuaded Rem to write my true name in the Death Note. Most likely to protect Misa. This can be confirmed easily, as Watari was just murdered.” L stopped. So soon, had he put his most beloved person’s death to use…it sickened him, but he continued on. “He wanted to make it look like a death god’s final act of defiance…well, it didn’t work.

I was supposed to die as well.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a piece of paper. “Part of the Death Note was torn out. I had yet to know if it works when not attached to the Death Note, but now it is certain. I found the torn out piece;” he presented the small scrap of paper, “inside of Light’s watch.” He reached into his other pocket and pulled out Light’s watch, showing everyone the mechanism that allowed small objects to be hidden in it. “Rem tried to kill me by simply writing my name in the Death Note. However, she was too late. I beat her to it. I wrote my name in the Death Note first.”

Everyone continued to stare in disbelief, not quite fully grasping what L was saying. Light was clearly starting to lose it, as two of the team grabbed his arms and locking him in place. L continued on. “The Death Note can’t make a person die twice. I wrote my name in it about an hour ago, but Rem wrote it only a few minutes before now. The Death Note will comply only to the first time of death written, even if a second one is earlier. So, I live, and Light’s plan has failed.”

Light’s eyes started to lose life, lose purpose. His life was over. Only death row or lifelong imprisonment was stored in his once very potential future. He looked at L one last time. His enemy. L stared back. Keeping his monotone voice, never showing any emotion, replied to Light’s gaze.

“I win, Kira.”

Light was carried away by police officers, with a dozen squad cars waiting outside to secure the area for Kira. Yagami Sr. leaned in the doorway as his son was shoved into the backseat of a police vehicle, and driven away. He slumped to the ground, face full of tears, as his thoughts went back to all his memories of trying to track Kira. All a waste…and so was the pride of his life. He then remembered the rest of his family. They’ll take it just as hard as he did…but they will endure. Yagami stood back up, knowing that even though he produced a failure, he still had a purpose. He walked back inside.

L was in Watari’s room, looking at the heap that was his first and last hope in life. Nothing seemed to matter much now that Watari and Light were gone. He closed the door, hiding away the evidence of evil.
Yagami saw L standing in the hall outside of Watari’s room, looking down, with his hands in his pockets. He walked up to him. They both lost the same thing. Yagami looked at L, and asking the last question left unanswered.
“If you wrote your name in the Death Note, when are you going to die?”
L looked at him with a slight smile and an expression of calm.
“Tomorrow.”

The Bells were silent.
