Eh, I was kind of using Death Note to make a generalized statement though. Like all the wakos who think Harry Potter is the work of the devil and will turn kids evil. :P
There isn't some call to ban the anime or manga, other than China and if you take the time to read, you see that they're concerned over troubled kids who aren't getting the care they need.
And also adults need to stop thinking they can get rid of the problem by attacking Death Note as the source of it. This sort of thing will still go on regardless. Too many people think they can clean up the world by simply labeling something as "evil" and attacking it.
I went and took a look at all of the articles and related links. Other than China, no one is blaming Death Note. On the contrary, they're talking about the need for more counselors to deal with troubled youths instead of going... omg ban Death Note. Just saying.
Yeah, and that's totally true. Most(that's right, I said "most")middle school aged otaku have control over themselves when it comes to things like that.
(You'd think I would know, since I just left middle school and I still have friends in middle school...And really, if you can say it in a sentence and make it sound like it's a word, then it's a word. :P)
I dunno. I'm just pretty sure (almost positive) that most kids who make some kind of 'Death List' don't watch anime or know what Death Note is. Then again, there's plenty of kids that do know what it is....
I want to know if the creator ever wondered about something like this happening when he was creating Death Note..

Okay, so I went back and read the article a little more carefully, and it turns out the kid from VA was a senior. But all of the other incidents were involving middle school aged kids...Still proves my point. ;D
The little kid was about seven (if I remember right) and him and his friends were "playing" Naruto. He decided to like, do the little "sand coffin" thing, or whatever it's called.
-hasn't seen Naruto in about two years and doesn't remember anything-

1. If it says 16+ and your not 16, don't watch it. I can understand maybe 15.
2. Kids have done this before.
3. The beginning of Medium starts out with, "Do you remember today?"
"Of course I do! It's been a year since your family was slaughtered."
And I cracked up. "Haha, Marie's brought the cake!"

I am not laughing at this, I find it pretty sad that people are laughing at this. What if the kid had murdered his classmates and teachers? Although it may seem impossible for a kid to get a bomb, it is not impossible. If people checked the Australian article, they will see that the kid who planned all of these 'future murders' and bombing, was labeled as mentally ill/depressed, for that article talked about mentally ill and severely depressed kids wanting to do dangerous things to themselves and to people around them. I feel sorry for the poor kid since kids like these need attention and a lot of help to cope with their problems :(
Just because people may write names of people they don't like or hate and want them to die, does not make it all right. I find it a little disturbing and hurtful if I would find my name in a "hate" piece of paper even if it was a joke. People should always seek for help if they really need it or pay attention to those who need it. Ignorance is the root of all evil.
I am not a follower, I am a friend. I do not ask for subscribers, only friends.
OMFrogginG. I'm in 8th grade too, and yes, I have told my friends whose names I would put in the Death Note if I had one, but I'd never actally KILL the people! Oh my Gaara, what's WRONG with him...but it IS a lil' bit funny. Does that make me a bad person? TT^TT
In a sick way, I found this kinda funny...mainly cos it's the sort of thing that my friends would probebly do...I highly doubt that this kid was serious...people have different ways of dealing with aggression...maybe that was the cause...(also, I've found myself a little over-excited cos they used my artwork ^^ tehe)
well, this is what i think, in my country 8 - graders (known as form 1, which are 5 years away from leaving school)are around 12 or 13 years old, these young teens often take animes and shows too seriously, this (to a certain extent) stupidity combined with a wide imagination, stress of school, being bullied or even stress at home can make them do totally abrupt things. in my opinion the death note it's self was not to blame, but instead they should have had a good long talk with the child instead of simply taking the high road and banning the death notes.
your stated Death Note moral, I agree with.
erm, I watched Inuyasha in 7th grade but I didn't go around carrying knives trying to kill "demons" aka people I didn't like
Get a grip people. There is a fine line between reality and anime. I think it takes a certain common sense to see what's wrong and what's not.
especially that kid who imiated Gaara. oh come on, Gaara CHANGED.
and what he did I bet haunts him to this day. Gaars is GEWD now lol
I doubt that the kid was that serious about all this. I also make plans to bomb my school and slaughter my teachers, but so do most students out there. Why they took an eight grader that seriously is beyond me...
Oh btw, I also have a (hand-made) Death Note full of writing. Am I going to get in trouble too? *puppy dog eyes*
O_O OMG!!! Where were the parents when the kid was watching this?! And I'm pretty sure that they are supposed to check kids ages if they try to buy that anime. So who bought it for the child?! Geez! Obviously the child didn't understand what the story truly meant. This is why we have ratings!!! I just hope they caught it before anyone got hurt!
"There are some possessions that must never be sold for all the fortunes of the world."
Wasn't the kid from Virginia that did some Death-Note thing a while back in middle school as well? Same with that other kid?
I personally think it's obvious that this Australian kid based at least a LITTLE of this off of Death Note...Personally.
Did anybody else ever hear about that one little boy who was trying to imitate Gaara from Naruto and was buried-and then killed-from suffocating in a sand box? I watched something about it on Youtube, it was from the news.
If you really think about it, this Death Note stuff isn't the only anime that makes kids do stupid things. D:
