I still think shooting it down forthright is a potentially bad idea for the long haul. The least that can be done is a happy medium between the two. It's like tearing down older homes for highrises--save some for the historical importance aspect, but the new buildings next door will hold scores more than what was previously there. A little self-sacrifice is what made the Japanese people who they are.
I think the main thing was that the bridge would interfere with the harbor itself. Part of Tomonoura Harbor was set to be recclaimed and demolished to create this bridge. The people who are mostly happy are the locals and Miyazaki himself.
So even though this bridge could have helped drainage and traffic congestion, possibly aiding in the lives of the locals for a huge variety of reasons, everyone's excited because it's not gonna be there. Couldn't you see the harbor from the other side, if you're so worried about obstruction of vision? Couldn't the bridge just become a new local landmark? I'm not sure if we have the whole story here.
Yeah, Miyazaki gets a lot of his inspiration from real cities or places around the world. If you watch all of his movies, you start to recognize them. ;D
Personally, I think it's really cool that he does it. And I'm glad that they were able to do this :D It's nice to see good things happen to anime-related stuff.

Very flattered you used my picture as the tumbnail.
Also very glad to hear about the power of anime. Ponyo's setting is both magical and human...the sort of place you would love to live in yourself.

Yeah. For one thing, it saves him the trouble of making fictional landscapes from scratch! And, once in a while, this happens.

That's good to hear =)
It's nice to see an anime inspiring things rather than it being blamed for stuff constantly, like in the Death Note article a few ways down.

That was a real place? Wow, pretty. I wonder what they're going to do about the bridge now, though. Generally those aren't put up without good reason.
