Considering that Japan is one of countries that are seriously exploring the idea of using robotics in space, giving more maneuverability, agility, and abilities to various robots does make sense. They might as well work out the kinks now, on even a small level like this, and then see where it goes from there.
In any event, jumping robots are cool. Now, when are they going to give them boosters, so they can fly as well?

Also, it must be noted that further research on this topic showed that Ropid may be the first humanoid robot to jump, but it's not the first robot to jump. The first is actually Jollbot, and for more info on this robot you can read the article "One Giant Leap for Robot-Kind" from the Daily Express.
