I can see this going either way. Maybe, now this is supposing he did play Light, maybe he'd do a good job. But, I'm not sure if he'd be able to be dark or evil enough. I guess I just don't know.
The only thing if he DOES play Light, and I go to the theater, I don't want to be mistaken as going to the movie for Efron. I'd be going there for Death Note. (although, now that I think about it, how interesting it would be to have Zac Efron in Death Note. Guess I'm rooting for him!
okay, i heard he was wanting to branch away from musicals to avoid being typecast, but, assuming this were true, why would they even consider him? sure he could be a good actor (17 again proved that), but then he can be really bad too (high school musical anyone?). way to ruin another great japanese story america...
If actors seem to be cast based on popularity, then how do little indie films with no-name actors ever break out? They do it by word-of-mouth, which is just as powerful and then some in comparison to popularity. How else would you explain Paranormal Activity taking the nation by storm with no big stars or said big stars taking roles in flicks that still do poorly just because they need the money or are killing time? Robert Downey Jr., for instance, has recently been in Iron Man and The Soloist, but most people have only heard of and/or know him in the former. Sure, plenty of actors and actresses go the Adam West route, but your claim is blowing it a bit out of proportion here.
First of all,
CASTING DIRECTORS NOW A DAYS ARE FOCUSED ON POPULARITY!
I personally think that movies now a day have actors who don't play the role of the character, but just play the role of themselves.
As an Actor myself, one of motto's that we live by is
"Play well the part, for that is where the Honor lies!"
But what I see in the movies is just
"Play the part because your getting a boat load of cash"
Johnny Depp is one of the exceptions, He's popular because he's a good actor, although he IS paid lots of cash (also in this categorize includes Tom Hanks, and (sometimes not) Will Smith)
Zac Effron, I thinks, is a good actor, but is one who manipulated by others *cough*MICKEY*cough*
If Zac gets the part, he better not get it because he's the one who will get the movie lots of money, but who fits the role of Light Yagami the best.
But hey, if that's what the director wants, so be it. It's his form of art, not ours...
I'm going to be conceited and say I should be Light.
I don't even like Death Note, let alone any of Efron's popular Disney, but I want this to happen too... even if it's just to watch the Death Note fans shrivel up into dust as High School Musical fans fill their precious theatres with their non-emo-ness and shrieking fangirls. :3
What I would give to see Efron as Kira. And all those tweenie fangirls cry as their beloved basketball star turns out to be a homicidal maniac. Yep.
But really, I think Efron would do a decent job. And if not, well, Death Note is a much better way to crash and burn than in another feel-good family movie.
I really wish they'd just come out and say they're making the American live action or if Zac is going to be in it : / getting tired of all these vague rumors. Also, (I know I'm going to get hounded for this) I hope Zac plays Light. I think he'll do a good job. We just haven't seen him in any other films besides musicals and high school related films (though DN is slightly HS related) He needs to show is darker side and be able to show more emotion. This'll be a great way for him to lay himself out and show us what he can really do.

You can't use a blunt object to cut a cake right.
You can't use a bad actor to tell a story right.
