One Piece is just that awesome. There are no repeats in the story, everything is so unique, it has the perfect balance of every genre. There something for everyone to love.
There's a reason as to why this is happening: One Piece is freakin' amazing. I think the only reason why it hasn't been as big in North America as it is almost everywhere else is because of the initial handling of the anime (which was awful, yes, now no whining please). I think it throws a lot of people when One Piece is being mentioned as a hugely influential manga right up there with Dragonball and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and there is very little that can be done to take it from that spot. For being a series that runs on the Rule of Cool in its own little universe of awesome, I'm not surprised at the huge numbers.
Here were the sales of the One Piece volumes back in 2008. Note that the rank given refers to its rank in the list of top-selling manga during that year.
1.) One Piece #50 - 1,678,208
2.) One Piece #51 - 1,646,978
4.) One Piece #49 - 1,544,000
And here are the sales of the One Piece volumes in 2009.
1.) One Piece #53 - 2,057,528
2.) One Piece #54 - 1,963,696
3.) One Piece #52 - 1,952,551
4.) One Piece #55 - 1,810,410
Need I also mentioned that Volume 55 sold 1,121,685 copies during the first week of its release alone.
