Considering that the MJ-Sonic connection has been going on for years, it's actually a big deal for a lot of people. Take note that the guy involved is Michael Jackson, who was basically a very influential and "larger than life" entertainer (especially during the production period of Sonic 3). Also, this originally started as a rumor when fans noticed his "Stranger in Moscow" sounded similar to a Sonic 3 sound bit (I believe it was the credits). While many people associated with the game affirmed the belief, others debunked it or kept silent about it (such as SEGA). And so it continues to be an urban legend of sorts.
What made this news significant was that it was mentioned by someone who worked on the Sonic 3 music and, presumably, worked with Jackson for that game.

"Ken Horowitz from Sega-16.com—whose exhaustive research on claims that Jackson contributed to Sonic 3 can be (and should be) read here—disputes that Buxer's statements about Michael Jackson's musical efforts in the Genesis game do not yet constitute proof of anything. Horowitz also contends that Buxer's claim contradicts statements of some Sega employees.
In other words, our long national nightmare of not knowing whether or not Michael Jackson worked on Sonic 3 without a shadow of a doubt is not yet behind us."

Personally, I don't care. It had great music. I especially loved the music during the credits.
