Although it was proven that children can sit close to the tv, with little to no effect on their eyesight. However, flashing lights can, and normally will cause seizures for some people. Today's my birthday!

Yeah, that's true. But this little paragraph ought to explain why the kids were even near the television:
In a country with more than 126 million people in an area the size of Montana and a population density of 865 per square mile, Japanese homes are typically quite small. Big-screen televisions are the norm, and most living rooms could aptly be described as small theaters. Many children sit very close to the television as well; one 14-year-old boy sitting three feet from his big-screen television was struck unconscious. (Radford, 2001)
With that in mind, the incident somehow lead anime shows to show warnings against being too close to the TV, such as School Rumble.
What the heck?!! all of those incidents were completely random and theres no way to plan against seizures, you could get those watching a highly graphic movie dude. and wat kind of parent gets their child a toy that is for 3 year olds and older thats their fault! come on people!
The clip that you watch on YouTube is already a toned-down and blurry version of the original scene that was played during that fateful night in 1997. In other words, it ain't as bright as it originally was on that night, so you should not be able to feel the seizure effect. I remember viewing a site that hosted a video clip of that scene, and it clearly stated there that it had already been toned down. And this was before YouTube was born.
Also, other factors played a role in the seizures, such as nearness to the video screen, the lighting in the room, and heredity traits (which you pointed out). There was also mass hysteria, which could have been triggered by the huge media coverage of the incident.
Let's face it. The world of Pokemon is essentially a cult. We have our own language between each other and then trade while idolizing these characters! While, also look how many years it has been since it started and we're still TALKING ABOUT IT!!! A piece of my heart is still devoted to the old ways of Pokemon. But seriously, it just needs to die now.

About the Pokemon seizure incident of '97:
The clip that you watch on YouTube is already a toned-down and blurry version of the original scene that was played during that fateful night in 1997. In other words, it ain't as bright as it originally was on that night, so you should not be able to feel the seizure effect. Ah, I remember the suffocation incident. And saying that made me feel old.

Jeez, why can't people protest something important. It's a cartoon.
It's like saying that an animal that bites a child should be killed; it just doesn't make sense.
