Holy crap! The cost of living there really is expensive. All I had to do is divide the cost by 2 to see its equivalent cost in Philippine pesos. Comparing it with the prices I normally encounter in the local grocery just made my head spin.
Although seriously, why do haircuts in other countries have to be expensive? I can have one here and it only cost less than US$ 1.00.
Anyway, thank you very much for the info. I really appreciate it.
Aw, do I really have to? Okay...let's see, off the top of my head, a single apple costs about $4. That's why Japanese people always cut up their fruit and never eat it whole, to make sure that they eat as much as possible. (source: Japanese teacher, who spent a couple of years living in Japan.)
Take into consideration that Japan is a tiny island nation the size of California with 3.5x as many people. Also take into consideration that most of the land is mountain, and therefore not very fertile. Low Supply and High Demand = survival based on imports = expensive.
But if you still aren't convinced and MUST have the statistics:
Personally, I actually think their salaries are still pretty high. 1.1 million yen is equivalent to PHP 550,000 in our place, which would then mean that the monthly income would be around PHP 45,833. I see that amount of money as considerably high for a salary. Then again, the cost of living in Japan must be different from our country.

$11,600 is really low, at least going by American standards. Hopefully these people live outside of the city, where the cost of living can't possibly be as high...

That is insane... you'd be below the poverty line in Canada with that kind of pay. Thanks for this eye opening information.

Keep in mind that conversion rates are about 100 yen to 1 dollar, which means a 77g Cup of Instant Ramen costs $1.37 there.

Really? Can you give an example, like how much the cost of basic needs are in Japan compared to the US?

Wow, that's really low...O_O icky...most American animators make more than that, the average is about 30,000 for people starting off.

I'd be happy to be trained; at least I'd be doing something I like and I'd be around other people. Heck, I'm a janitor now and work alone.
