I agree with you. That wouldn't be the best move right now...Sure it might help stimulate the economy a smidge but, lots of taxpayers who aren't otaku would be seriously pissed.
She does make a point. None of the taxpayers (with the exception of hardcore, obsessive otaku) will want this museum built using their money. For one thing, not everyone is a fan, and it's a slap in the face to those who aren't. For another...seriously, an anime museum right now, with everything that's going on? No, I don't think so.
This kinda reminds me of the time Quentin Tarantino turned down a director position for a movie he wasn't the director of yet as if his position were assured the whole time. I suppose it was a bit more likely that the mangaka in question would actually appear in the museum, though.
But yeah, if people in the industry are saying no, it's time to back down. Japan doesn't want it.
