WHAT????? They haven't even showed it yet, and someone already goes and ruins it for us die hard fans. I hope they catch whoever did and and completely destroy them. God it was only one day and they couldn't even wait. Sheesh, just when One Piece started to get the respect it deserved.
yays...yet another way that *play ominous music* 'the man' has brought us down. Sure, it was bad for whoever did this to do this, and, sure Funimation is partially, if not mostly at fault, but couldn't they trace this WHOLE thing through the WEBernet, and find out EXACTLY where this fiendishly horrible little *CENSORED* is???
Whether this was caused solely by this stupid individual alone, or is the work of both FUNimation and this stupid individual, what's done is done. If FUNimation didn't plan to stick with the simulcast, then they shouldn't have gotten us all hyped up about it.
Welcome to the internet.

It was copyright infringement for them to redistribute the episode, yes. I'm not saying it was legal for them to do so. But I think that's irrelevant in this situation.
Streams have been getting ripped and redistributed for a while now, even ones that are protected and aren't supposed to be viewable without a subscription at first. (See Crunchyroll and HorribleSubs.) FUNimation knows this and Toei (producer of One Piece) would've had to have been stupid not to be aware of it. So I'm pretty sure they both knew it would happen and I don't think they would've canceled the simulcast over just that.
The problem was that the episode got into the public's hands before it was supposed to be available, even in Japan. Not because of the person who redistributed it but because of FUNimation's complete lack of security. Even if the guy hadn't redistributed it himself, everyone still could've downloaded the episode early, direct from FUNimation's site, so long as they knew where to look – he could've simply posted a link to it, which would've been completely legal. And all FUNimation would've had to do to keep the episode out of people's hands was put it in a folder on their server not accessible by the internet or, you know, just not upload it at all before it should've been available. Failing to do so was no one's fault but FUNimation's.

This is entirely FUNimation's fault. They left their streaming videos in a publicly accessible folder on their server, completely unprotected, and uploaded some episodes days before they were broadcast in Japan. All you had to do was tweak the URL of the FLV files and you could find them. The claims that their servers were compromised are complete BS.
Koda wrote a detailed blog post about this. It contains some swearing, so I'll slap a warning on here for the easily offended, but it shows just how stupid FUNimation has been with their entire streaming operation.

I could never watch the video streams in Funimation because I'm not in North America, but even I feel the pain that you guys must be having right now. This is just too upsetting to see.
And before you comment, it's a good idea to check out the link as well to see Funimation's official statement on the matter.

@Desbreko:
but it doesn't give the person who uploaded it and distribute the right to do so and mess it up for everyone else
