Miyazaki does make great movies, but the Disney connection ruined it for people. Why couldn't they just pull the Spirited Away trick and just release it without any input?
I am actually quite glad you asked that.
Basically, the entire reason Disney is involved is merely because the film needed a distributor that could reach as many decent markets as possible. Distributing/presenting a film does not mean that the company/person personally worked on it. For example, Quentin Tarintino presented the Chinese film Hero, allowing his name to be tacked on as a promotional trick in order to garner a larger audience. Although the Disney name is attached to Ponyo in the U.S., it surely assisted in bringing in some non-otaku revenue... 'cause admit it, we're still a small niche demographic that cannot often support a large motion picture project alone. Marketing to the non-otaku crowd that have issues even pronouncing Miyazaki Hayao's name is a big part of it, whether we like it or not.
Besides, the North American versions of Spirited Away and Ponyo were both produced by John Lasseter (amongst others) and he is one of the geniuses behind the Pixar movies. If Lasseter is involved, I trust the project shall be decent at the worst. The man's an anime fan himself, so it's surely a "one of us" moment in the geeks amongst geeks.
I'm sorry if that looked like harassment, man, but I just wanted it to be out there. Nothing against ya.
Wow! It looks amazing, I really want to go see it! ^^
Honestly, I don't even care about the voices anymore, I've seen trailers and the two honestly sound really good (as I feared lol). Besides, Frankie Jonas isn't part of the "Jonas brothers" (the band) as some assume, he's like, ten and the same goes for Cyrus's little sister. Who knows, maybe the kids actually have a shot at being something decent lol. (I don't believe in guilt by association ^^;)
Anyhoo...I still can't wait to see it! It looks friggen cute!!!!

I saw the movie RAW just a few days before it was announced to come out in theaters! What a coincidence!
8th higest is not too hard to beleive! Hayao Miyuzaki and Studio Ghibli make great movies!
Congats Ponyo!
Wow. Congrats to Ponyo for grossing that much. And 9th in the box office? Never thought it would do that well. Thank you for the info and, now I might actually go see it.
