Honestly, I am against the heavy goth/emo look as it currently stands. It used to be that goths were different and individualistic. Now it's a mindless trend. Think differently? There's packs of them wandering around, thinking they're being cool and edgy when they're just following something that they don't even understand fundamentally. One of the reasons I have been able to stand Bakuman better than Death Note is that it doesn't look like an emo/goth mess. The same reason is also why I was very, very worried when One Piece went into the Thriller Bark arc. The look very rarely works anymore without looking like it should be beat up by the Varsity football team and thrown into the janitor's closet.
...but, you're right. It might fit. I hope to God that it fits if that is the case.
Hopefully the art isn't heavy on the emo/goth look. D: That's the last thing literary classics need.
Due to his penchant for getting wrapped up in mysteries and/or writing about writing mysteries, I'm taking a stab at this and saying Sherlock Holmes. If not, it can easily be something set in the late 1800's, since I think his art style would be quite fitting in some cases.

Hmmmmmm, that's true.
But the heavy goth look might actually fit the story.
LOL. Who knows?
I think an Edgar Allen Poe story would be perfect for his style. That Sherlock Homes idea sounds awesome as well ;o
