Chapter 3:
“So… sleeping arrangements.”
“You will be sleeping outside of my sister’s room like a good boy.”
“Hey, hey, hey! I’m not a dog!”
“You should be, Demon Boy. It’d suit you better.”
“FOR THE LAST TIME IT’S CHRISTIAN!!!!”
“Guys, guys! Stop fighting!”
That’s how a majority of the car ride went (when Richard and I weren’t death glaring each other). Our heated debate was over where the heck I was sleeping. Or staying, really, since I didn’t have the ability to sleep.
Eventually we (i.e. Julia) reached a compromise. I would mostly stay by the daybed under her window. I say “mostly” because having an eternal sate of insomnia is bound to make me bored and wander. However, I knew I couldn’t stray too far because of the whole “she’s asleep and needs protection” issue.
As we were getting out of the van, a cutsey ringtone erupted from my pocket, much to my chagrin and Richard’s amusement.
“Hello?” I answered, not bothering to look at the caller ID.
“Hi sweetie!” A very excited yet male voice responded. “It’s time for your first official mission~!”
“…Who is this again?”
“Oh, why honey! It’s me! Your mother! Well, really every guardian angel’s mother, but that doesn’t matter, now does it~? Anyways, you’re taking care of that adorable little girl, aren’t you? Well, get this, apparently an F Level LCD has taken over her violin teacher’s mind! Isn’t it terrible? It’s up to you to get rid of it right away, okay?”
“Wait, wait, wait.” I said, beginning to pace back and forth irately. “I am so lost. What’s an LCD? How do I get rid of it? And I’ll repeat, WHO ARE YOU?”
“Garrett never introduced me to you, did he? Tch, how rude of him. I suppose it’s better late than never, after all. I’m Raphael! I watch over a whole LOT of things, but a side job is watching over guardian angels.”
“You’re Raphael… as in the Archangel?”
“So Garrett has mentioned me! Wonderful! Simply superb!” I could hear him – HIM – clapping over the other line. “You were asking about the LCDs correct? LCD is short for ‘Lower Class Demon’. Being a guardian angel of a teenage girl, you’re bound to come across quite a few of them. LCDs typically look like black smoke either surrounding a person or leaving a person when purified. Let’s see… according to what I have on you, you were taught how to fight with two knives. You’ll use those to fight the demons. You don’t have to worry about using your weapons against the Lower-Level LCDs; any positive influence coming from you is enough to make them leave. Anything higher would require your knives. Ah! I completely forgot! I have to explain the Level system of LCDs, don’t I? They range from A to F level. Level ‘A’s are the strongest; Level ‘F’s are the lowest. Any LCD within the A to C level needs weapons to be dealt with and D to F level only needs a positive influence.” I tried to pause to think about everything he said but it was only a matter of milliseconds before he continued to ramble on. “I must have really confused you, huh? This is a lot to take in, after all. You don’t need to absorb it all right this instance. You’ll get used to it after a while. All you need to concentrate on is making sure that the violin teacher doesn’t do anything to Julia.”
“… You should have told me all of this earlier. I already ‘purified’ the demon or whatever.”
“Really? Well, you are a bright young man! I’m so lucky to have a son like you!” Excuse me?! “But keep in mind that you won’t be fortunate like that all the time.”
“I know, Mr. Raphael-”
“CALL ME MOM.”
“Alright... Mom…? Uh, yeah. Thanks for the advice…” I slowly said in the remnants of his sudden outburst.
“No problem, sweetie~! Just be careful, okay~?” And just like that, he was back to what I assumed was his normal over-happy outlook and hung up, leaving me to want to bash my head into a brick wall from the sheer stupidity that just occurred.
