Overview from Courtney (yamisgirl) on the anime series Blood+

Last night [adultswim] aired the final episode of Blood+. I felt relieved, I cried, and I tried to put all of the fifty episodes into one asking myself many questions and some I still do not have answers for. If you’re looking for another anime series I recommend this one unless if you get very emotional and are not into soap operas for this series is DEF an anime version of a soap opera.

WARNING: I am going to write this up the best I can without spoilers because I know that there are those that hate spoilers as much as I do and I TOTALLY understand that! If you wish to know more, then ask in your comments. Also, I am writing it as it comes into my head. The events are not in this order when watching the series

The series Blood+ is one of the very few anime series that not animated after a manga series. In fact, Blood+ is animated after the anime film Blood: The Last Vampire (which I am indeed watching today). The manga series for Blood+ has in fact just begun with Volume 1 in book stores now (I owe it).

Blood+ is an anime series about a girl named Saya Otonashi who lives a normal life in Okinawa with her father and adopted brothers, Kai and Riku. However, Saya is not your everyday ordinary high school girl. In fact, she is a blood thirsty creature known as a chiropteran. Born from a unique species with her younger sister Diva, Saya must live off blood in order to survive. In Okinawa, Saya goes to the hospital weekly to receive the right amount of blood through an IV. Saya is raised well and accompanied by Haji (or Hagi if you just LOVE the English spelling, but I love his Japanese name better), her future chevalier, the second highest level of chiropterans in terms of strength and ability. After Haji receives Saya’s blood and becomes her chevalier, Saya steals the key to Diva’s room, where she has been locked up ever since she was born – never to see the light of day and the warmth of the sun beating against her skin. Big mistake. Diva’s anger of being left behind gets to her and she sets the mansion that Saya lives in on fire, killing everyone who’s in it. When Saya finds the mansion engulfed in flames, she clings against Haji as he promises her to always be by her side and to protect her until the battle with Diva comes to an end. Many years later, Saya is adopted by her father and starts living a normal life with her brothers and her best friend at school. However, her memories of killing others back in the war are effecting the way she thinks. Late one evening, Saya runs back to school to pick up her track and field shoes that she left behind. This is where Saya awakens. Saya must fight a chiropteran with the help of Haji to save her school from being torn apart, or before she gets killed… one or the other. Now that Saya is awake, she must fight to protect everyone, kill all chiropterans, and kill Diva once and for all. With help of the Red Shield, Haji, and her family, Saya takes every risky step that she needs to in order to achieve her goal.

I really enjoyed this anime series. I always feel so pumped up every Saturday night to find out what happens next. I wouldn’t call it a fun anime like Bleach, Naruto, etc because the series is just huge pile of sadness with very little happiness, but it really entertains you. After watching the entire series, the last episode really hit me. You can’t help but love almost all the characters as well and relate to a few of them. I recommend this anime and good luck to all of you that decided to check it out. Feel free to ask any questions!
