Ana was rudely awakened by people banging on the door to her room. Shifting, she buried her head into the pillow, grumbling, and ignored them, hoping to sleep some more before she had to go to meet with Leader. Ana curled up tight, squeezing her wings to her body and wrapping her tail around her legs.
Soon after the banging stopped however, Ana heard someone picking her lock. She rolled over with dread. They'd sent Lalita. The woman, besides being her oldest friend, knew Ana's ways best and was, as far as Ana was concerned, a complete demon in the mornings.
Soon, light shone into Ana's comfortable nest of a room, bringing the clutter into the light of day. And soon, Lalita was poking Ana in the side, saying something that Ana's brain refused to comprehend.
Groaning, Ana rolled over again, but to far in the wrong direction, and tumbled off her loft bed onto the ground, where she flailed like a dying fish.
To a stranger, the sight on the floor was a strange one. A person wrapped in a tangle of blankets on the floor rolling around, with too many flailing limbs to be strictly human. Lalita saw her best friend resisting being woken up. Ana felt severely gypped, because now that she was out of bed, she would have to get up.
Suddenly the room was way to bright. Ana gave another flail before getting her head out of the tangled blankets and looked up at Lalita, who had turned the barely used overhead lights on. "What's the time?" Ana asked groggily.
"Nearly noon," Lalita replied. "You, old friend, have a meeting with Leader. In a half hour. Word is you have an assignment." At this, Ana finally woke fully up.
"It's about time!" she cried, wiggling out of her cocoon of blankets. "Do you know who's my partner gonna be?"
"I've asked around, and no, I don't. It's almost troubling how no one knows." Lalita's dark face looked thoughtful and worried.
"Don't worry Lali," Ana said, ruffling through her wardrobe, "I can get along with most everyone."
"I hope so." Lalita replied. "Good luck."
"Thanks!" Ana gave Lalita an absentminded wave as she left, shutting the door softly behind her.
Now this, Ana thought, might be the best morning all week!
