What A Girl Wants & Bell's Piece of Mind

Ahaha, I've been listening to so much K-Pop the past couple days. Which is bad, since listening to any music that isn't Chinese breaks the pledge, but honestly! At least it's not in English. And I've been listening to almost nothing but Jay Chou for the past two weeks! The Taiwanese music industry seems fairly small, and the Chinese music industry is practically nonexistent to us Westerners! I can't listen to the same forty songs for nine weeks. x__x

Rules:
-Tag at least 6 people.
-Be honest...

01. What are your favorite things about theOtaku?
The people here. I've been here for a while, and this really is the only community I've ever felt 'at home' in. :)

As for specific features, I like challenges and the range of submissions. And how blogs are set up now. :D

02. What's the most detestable things you found in this site?
Detestable is a strong word, haha. I honestly don't know... I guess when mediocre quality fanworks get a lot of attention? And especially if it's just because there's some humorous one-liner slapped onto it. (Not just with e-cards, fanart can be like this too!) Though I think it's a smaller problem now than it was a year ago.

03. What's your hope when you subscribe to someone?
Depends. If I like reading the person's World(s), then I hope their World posts stay interesting. If I like their art, I hope their art stays interesting. xD

04. If you're given one chance to change a feature in this site, what would that be?
How tags are set up in Worlds. They should be more prominent! Tags are so much more useful on other blog sites than they are on theO. I also feel like something needs to be changed in the way Fan Words are set up/categorized. Because just seeing the title/author/fandom is not really enough to get people interested in reading. For fanfics especially, people usually need short summaries... though I don't have any great suggestions myself, honestly. ^^;

05. Do you like meeting new members, and why is that?
I don't mind meeting new members, but I don't go out of my way to. Just like IRL, it really boils down to the person him/herself and whether I have a reason to want to get to know them better...

06. What do you like most in some of theO members?
lol, I dunno. It depends on the person? I guess people on this site tend to be pretty cordial. I've never seen 4chan-level asshole-ry on here, at least.

07. Do you have something you hate in some of the members?
No. Nowadays, I have too much RL drama to bother with Internet drama. If you want, I could write a ten-page essay on the things I hate in people I know at Kenyon. lol

08. Lastly, what do you think of these questions? And do you hope it was never made?
They were interesting enough. And no to the 2nd question. I wouldn't be filling this out if I thought otherwise. xD

If snagged, repost as "________ Piece of Mind"

Life @ Midd

This is one of those times where I have so much I want to write that I don't even know where to start... and so I've avoided writing anything for the past week, lol.

I think I'm at the point where I'm more or less adjusted to being here and dealing with the language pledge. (Which I'm technically breaking by writing this. Shhh.) Considering how I've never really tried to speak any language other than English prior to arriving here, I'm surprised at how quickly I tore down so many of my reservations. Just six months ago, I refused to go to Kenyon's weekly Chinese table meetings, where students eat dinner with the Chinese professors and speak Chinese the whole time. Now I have to do that exact same thing at least twice a day. The whole "embarrassment" factor gets stripped away pretty quickly in this environment... yeah, my tones suck and the professors always have to slow down when they talk to me, but I'll never get better unless I keep at it. :)

EDIT: btw, my daily schedule is pretty hectic until the afternoon. I think I'm busier here than I was last semester, haha.

M-Th
Class A (large classes, about 20 students): 7:50-9:40AM
Class B (small classes, about 5-6 students): 9:50-11:30AM
One-on-One Session w/Prof: 1:45-2:00PM

F
Test: 7:50-10:00AM (I usually finish some time btwn 9:30-10:00AM)

Have been watching a couple Taiwanese dramas while here, namely 战神 (Mars) and 花樣少年少女 (Hana Kimi). The Hana Kimi drama is particularly interesting. It's so different from the Japanese version! And much better, in my opinion. This is a spoiler, so I'll write it in Chinese: 第二个episode的开始,左以泉(Zuo Yi Quan)已经知道盧瑞莃(Lu Rui Xi)是一个女人! 我还没看完日本的。可是我听说了,在日本的,左以泉(Zuo Yi Quan)故事的结束才发现了。我认为台湾的比较有意思,因为我懂为什么左以泉(Zuo Yi Quan)跟盧瑞莃(Lu Rui Xi)的爱越来越大。左以泉(Zuo Yi Quan)很快地发现他自己的感情。:)

  • Snuck into the nearby town with a friend last weekend and watched Toy Story 3. :)
  • Learning to play Mahjong while here. I get to play one hour a week, Thurs. nights. Maybe once I get back home, I'll watch Akagi. :3
  • Been watching a lot of Chinese/Taiwanese movies here, too. They're so depressing! What the hell.
  • I was so wrong about Jay Chou. So, so wrong. Prior to coming here, for some reason, I thought all he sung were love ballads. SO WRONG. He's so versatile. And so good! Seriouslyyyy, I wish I had known earlier. And fyi, a lot of people here also listen to S.H.E. and Wang Leehom, haha.
  • I'm not that good at Nimble Strong. LOL.

Have a couple memes I need to fill out tomorrow. In the meantime, have some Jay Chou.

Off to Middlebury in two days.

I know that when Friday comes, I will be scared as hell. I was already freaking out when I woke up this morning. This is one of the last days of the summer that I'll be allowed to speak English. What the fuck. HOW WILL I LIVE.

I'm starting to have this irrational fear that I'll be ostracized because my tones aren't very good and I freeze up a lot when it comes to speaking in a foreign language. (I've had many awkward silent moments with my Chinese prof this past year. *facepalm*) Honestly, I'm not very good at Chinese in comparison to most of my classmates. I tried to reason with myself, "But Kenyon is more hardcore with languages than most other colleges! The other students might be even more handicapped."

But then I thought about the types of students I know who have been going to Middlebury the past couple summers... and they were all above-average Chinese students. The mediocre students (e.g. me) usually opted not to go to Middlebury because it's too intimidating. So then isn't it reasonable to assume that the type of kids who go to Middlebury are usually "above average" at Chinese AND NOT MEDIOCRE LIKE ME??? I know it's good to push myself and all that, but I think back to some of the horror stories my first-year Chinese TA told my group. Especially the one where he had to perform a skit with his classmates and the other people in his group wanted to wing it. But when the time came, he couldn't think of anything to say, so he ended up not saying anything.

THAT SOUNDS LIKE ME!!! I mean, yeah, he ended up being able to speak Chinese well by the end of it. And I'm probably more prepared than I think... But damn it. I hope the experience isn't as horrifying as it could be. :(((

This weekend, I'm going to try to find anime fansites in Mandarin. I can't live without the Internet for two months. If any of you guys know of any, comment please. >_>;;;

In better news, more evolutions!

And several others. Look at Zack's doofy ass, lol. Nyanko-sensei evolved from his Lucky Cat figurine form into a very obese kitty. Natsume should force him to diet. And Izaya evolved from a... matchbook or something. Seriously, what was that thing? A piece of paper with information on it? lol

EDIT: One thing I forgot to add. A girl from Kenyon who I greatly dislike is going to Middlebury too. Though at least we won't be studying the same level of Chinese, so I might not see her all that often. I hope. What I find somewhat comforting is that this girl hardly studied Chinese this past year and was close to failing at one point... so if a girl like her can get through Middlebury, then so can I. Nevermind the fact that she has a slight advantage, since she is fluent in Cantonese and she says the words sound similar or something. :/

evolutions! xD

Yes, this is all very exciting for me. xDD

Kaito popped up in his bottle and the other sister appeared for Death the Kid. Thank you to those who have been clicking! :DDD

....Yeah, that was my main reason for posting, lol. But I guess while I'm here:

I thought I had lost this picture, since it was uploaded onto my friend's FB account, and for some reason, he turned his profile off for a while. But he turned it back on and I was able to recover it! I'm so glad b/c I really, really like this one. I look like schoolteacher, baking baseball-sized cookies with my class. xD

Donut Day

Just a heads up: to celebrate Donut Day, Dunkin' Donuts is giving away a free donut with the purchase of any drink. And if you have a Friendly's restaurant near you, they'll be giving away free ice cream tomorrow from noon to 5PM. :)

And I totally lied about not adopting any more adoptables. I guess I'm not much into them if it's random creatures being hatched, but if they're characters then I go FUCKING CRAZY!!! I even adopted characters from Lamento who I don't even really know anything about, but I saw how they look once hatched and they're GORGEOUS! GORGEOUS!!!

I can see this becoming a new time waster if I'm not careful. >_>;;
