Ohhhhh man. I can't remember the last time the very first episode of an anime left me feeling so... empowered. It feels good to be a woman!
I think a lot of my feelings stem from how the main chara, Kyoko, is pretty similar to me. (Except I would like to think that I'm not so self-destructive as to fall in love with an obvious jerk who doesn't give two shits about me!) But we're similar in the sense that, when we devote ourselves to someone, we really obsess over them and give our all to support them. I'm lucky enough to have never been betrayed by someone close to me, but if I ever found myself in a similar situation as Kyoko, I could TOTALLY see myself going crazy psychobitch on that pretty boy turd of a love interest the same way Kyoko did at the end of the episode.
So, HELL YEAH. GO KYOKO! KICK THAT MOTHERFUCKER'S ASS!
(Also, the concept of this show is sort of similar to the Korean movie 200 Pounds of Beauty... except less superficial. Korean views on plastic surgery really make me go o_______O)
Vampires vs The Vatican vs Nazis (And BL, too!)
1) About to watch the latest episode of Hellsing Ultimate/OVA. I had almost forgotten just how damn cool I thought this show was back when I first watched the original TV series in, like, 7th or 8th grade. And I had also almost forgotten how cool Integra is! I sort of remembered a similar scene in the original series, but I still got shivers when Alucard deliberately provoked Integra by asking her how she felt about him killing humans, and she responded, "Do not mock me, servant! I gave you a direct order. Nothing has changed! Search and destroy! Search and destroy!" SO. FUCKING. COOL.
Also, seeing Alucard sock a woman in the face, then strangle her, THEN impale her with her own gun was weirdly entertaining. Oh, this show!
For those who have yet to see either Hellsing TV or OVA, I would actually recommend watching the first four episodes of the original series before switching over to the OVA, and then watch from the 2nd episode onwards. The first ep. of the OVA was VERY rushed and it cut out some material in order to rush into the Millennium arc.
2) Ohhh, boy. I have SO many things I could say about Junjou Romantica. I think the bulk of it can be summed up in this:
Romantica <<< Terrorist <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Egoist
Fucking BL fangirls. I've always felt that I'm something of a black sheep amongst BL fans, but I've never felt it as strongly as I did while watching this show on Youtube! I did find this show pretty watchable despite it really not being that great on a technical level, but the other fangirls' opinions and comments regarding the main pairing of the show (Romantica) just astounded me.
Especially whenever someone said that the Romantica pairing was "realistic." Umm yeah, a 19-year old boy who spends most of his time either A) crying or B) denying the existence of a relationship with his living mate WHEN THEY'VE ALREADY GONE ON DATES AND HAD SEX, LIKE, FIFTY TIMES. Romantica is practically tailored to fit what most BL fangirls like in their pairings, so I could understand why so many people like that pairing best. But those girls are deluded if they think that pairing is in any way realistic. Unless they think realistic means "anything that panders to BL fans' interests." =_=;;
Thank GOD for the Egoist pairing. They made the entire show for me despite the very few episodes they're featured in. Unlike the more extraordinary ordeals that get thrown at the Romantica pairing, the problems of the Egoist pair are the types of issues couples (gay or not) might actually face in real-life: miscommunication, personal insecurities, dealing with physical distance and separation. I live for this stuff! *o*~
I seriously think the show would be a whole lot better if it focused more on the (CLEARLY MORE MATURE AND INTERESTING) Egoist pairing instead of the cliched Romantica pair. BUT APPARENTLY, BELL NEVER GETS WHAT SHE WISHES FOR. :(((
Kara no Kyoukai 5
20 minutes in, and I can already tell that this movie really is damn good. The editing is fantastic. It has the same "feel" that I get from some of Hollywood's high-end, psychological thrillers, and this one puts a LOT of effort into each scene. I particularly like the little montage of Tomoe and Shiki's everyday life and the many other repeating scenes and images used throughout the film thus far.
Will write out my impressions of the movie as I watch it from this point on:
25:09 - Damn, this anime is pretty.
26:57 - The score seems better than in previous movies... or maybe I just wasn't paying much attention before.
29:30 - Holy... And the plot thickens!
36:24 - The best fight scene I've seen in Kara no Kyoukai.
50:00 - There are TONS of small time leaps--both going forward and backwards, it seems. It's a little confusing, but I guess it's meant to be that way.
1:04:32 - Time leaps finally ended. Everything more or less makes sense by the end of this segment. That was probably the most interesting presentation of a dual-sided narrative that I've seen in a long while.
1:12:42 - No. Fucking. Way.
1:32:00 - I was expecting something like this to happen, but damn, it still sucks. :(
1:37:58 - Maaya Sakamoto has never sounded so pimp omfg.
1:40:58 - That is some damn good animation.
1:42:41 - All this "spiral of origin" talk remains confusing to me till the very end. That's probably the one thing I really dislike about this movie, that I really don't get, like, half of what the villain says throughout this entire thing.
1:46:45 - I don't know why, but this scene makes me very sad. I really liked that damn kid. :(
Very, very interesting. I'd say watching the prior movies is necessary in order to fully appreciate/understand this fifth installment, but for those particularly crunched for time, the most necessary ones to watch are the 2nd and 4th movies. (Though the 3rd movie is excellent and worth watching even as a stand-alone.)
This is probably teetering somewhere between a 9 and a 10 for me right now. If all that origin of spiral/taiji/counter force whatever were easier to understand, this would easily get a 10 on MAL. (And I've only given Monster, Princess Tutu, and Touch 10's so far...) It's definitely a well-made movie, in any case. Definitely worth checking out, even if I ultimately don't give it a 10. I think Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo still safely holds the position of my fav. anime movie despite being a little more flawed--but to repeat this for effect: this is a really, really well-made movie.
Former KyoAni Dir. Apologizes for Endless 8.
Former Kyoto Animation director Yamamoto Yutaka has known about the Haruhi “Endless Eight” arc for over a year now and was originally against its repetitive direction.
Over a year? What in the fuck. What is going on! WHO AM I.
Obligatory update:
Vampire Kamui & Subaru kick so much ass. Also, watching Tsubasa plus Code Geass R2 in the same day made me realize:
Kamui's cape was a prototype for Lelouch's. And random, but it's been about a year since I first watched Code Geass S1, and I still think Suzaku's best quality is his Sunglasses Look. *o*~
