Macau casino continues to recover from coronavirus-related plunge last year

Total gaming revenue in March has continued a slow recovery from last year's coronavirus-related slump after rising about 13.6% month-on-month to about $1.04 billion.

This monthly figure represents the best performance in the market for 2021, with an annual total of $2.95 billion, according to official information from Enclave's Bureau of Game Inspection and Coordination regulators. But the cumulative calculation is still about 22.5% below the $3.81 billion recorded in the same three months last year and 69% below the roughly $9.51 billion earned, the sources explained.

Still, casinos in Macau still posted March figures, 58% higher than the $656.32 million recorded in the same month last year, after the threat of the coronavirus pandemic forced officials to introduce various maximum capacity limits, travel restrictions and social distancing protocols. At the time, the risk posed by the disease known as the 'Wuhan virus' was even reported to be just $387,500, a decrease of 87.8 percent year-on-year in total capacity for the month as the former Portuguese residential government closed all local casinos for 15 days from Feb. 4.

JPMorgan says the Macau casino market has seen sequential improvements in weekly gross gaming revenue over the past month, with daily operating rates now reaching $33.46 million. The international brokerage also reportedly declared that this was 'the best monthly print since the coronavirus and showed a consistent sequential recovery from $31.21 million to $32.45 million per day over the past three months.'

"This seems to reflect improved travel sentiment and pent-up demand and some easing of restrictions in Macau, including the resumption of standing bets or the removal of coronavirus testing requirements for casino entry."

Still, fellow brokerage Sanford C Bernstein Limited reportedly announced its March tally was 'lower than expected in part due to continued weakness for the month'. The company also estimated that Macau's popular market game reception is currently at around 40% of its pre-pandemic peak, with VIP play "around 20%." 슬롯머신

Macau's total game sales in April could improve significantly if coronavirus-related disruptions shrink and foreign tourists increase.
