Liverpool's recruitment of Subimendi is becoming increasingly difficult.

Liverpool currently list Real Sociedad's Subimendi as the most likely candidate to sign him this summer after picking him as the top recruitment priority. After The Athletic's David Onstein reported earlier this week that Liverpool is considering a move to a defensive midfielder playing outside the Premier League, The Times' Paul Joyce went one step further and reported that Liverpool was aiming for Subimendi.
Subimendi has been attracting attention across Europe in recent seasons, with Manchester United, Arsenal and Barcelona all interested. Subimendi was part of the national team that led Spain to victory at Euro 2024 and played in place of Rodri in the final, helping beat England 2-1.
Subimendi is said to have a £51 million buyout clause in his contract with Real Sociedad, and new Liverpool manager Arne Slot is said to want Subimendi, who is good at building up and defending, as his first acquisition.
"We want Liverpool to play a more possession-based game. The priority is strengthening the No. 6 position through technical players," Slot said. Onstain said on the 8th (Korea time) that Sociedad officials expect Subimendi to agree to move to Liverpool.
However, a Spanish journalist said it was not a fait accompli for Gerard Romero to join Liverpool this summer. "It is unclear if Subimendi will go to Liverpool. It is also very clear that he will stay in Real Sociedad for another year," Romero tweeted.

Rabiot lost to Subimendi's Spain as part of the French national team that reached the semi-finals of the Euros. Rabiot left Juventus at the end of the 2023/24 season, during which he won one Serie A championship and two Copa Italy championships.
He reportedly turned down Juventus' new two-year contract offer and became a free agent, and has since contacted several clubs, including Manchester United and Real Madrid, in addition to Liverpool.
