Yen Press Announces Titles to Run in Anthology Mag

Soul Eater, Nabari no Ō, Sumomomo Momomo, Bamboo Blade, Higurashi manga

The manga versions of Atsushi Ohkubo's Soul Eater, Yuhki Kamatani's Nabari no Ō, Shinobu Ohtaka's Sumomomo Momomo, Masahiro Totsuka's Bamboo Blade and Seventh Expansion's Higurashi - When They Cry (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni) have all been acquired for American distribution by Yen Press. The publisher made the announcements during its Saturday afternoon panel at New York Comic Con 2008. Not coincidentally, each title has a related anime tie-in that was made in the last three years. All five will initially run in the Yen Plus anthology magazine, the first issue of which will be sold starting on July 29. Standard volumes of all five will go on sale in the first part of the next year.

A day before the convention, Yen Press had announced its acquisition of Gaku Tsugano's The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya manga and its joint venture with Little, Brown Readers for Young Readers to release Nagaru Tanigawa's original Haruhi Suzumiya light novels.

Naisho no Tsubomi Anime's Commercial Streamed

Anime based on "girls' sex education" manga to begin in Japan in April

The official Japanese website for the Naisho no Tsubomi original video animation is streaming a new commercial (500K or 1MB bandwidth) for the first DVD volume. The three volumes will ship monthly from April 25 to June 27.

Yu Yabuuchi (Aqua Age, Shōjo Shōnen) draws the original, critically acclaimed manga about a fifth-grade girl named Tsubomi who deals with issues such as her mother's pregnancy, her first period, and budding feelings for boys. This "girls' sex education" manga (and its Mebae prequel) has been running in Shogakukan's Shōgaku Yonnensei and Shōgaku Gonensei (literally, "Elementary Fourth-Grader" and "Elementary Fifth- Grader") magazines. The anime adaptation was announced last July.

Good news, Blizz Fans!

It was announced at New York Comic Con today that Blizzard, the publisher of dare-I-say-popular games like World of Warcraft and Starcraft and Tokyopop will be enterting a 3 year deal in which Tokyopop will publish 22 new Starcraft and Warcraft mangas.

Tokyopop editor-in-chief Rob Tokar said , "After several fantastic years of working with Blizzard Entertainment on Warcraft: The Sunwell Trilogy, it is both a pleasure and an honor to extend our relationship in such a grand fashion. The entire TOKYOPOP team is incredibly excited to help expand the Warcraft and StarCraft universes through manga. Blizzard has been a terrific partner and, by incorporating original characters from Warcraft: The Sunwell Trilogy into their incredible massively multiplayer online role-playing game, World of Warcraft®, they have again shown that their game universe is a vast, rich, immersive phenomenon that transcends any one medium."

In order to celebrate Starcraft's 10th anniversary, Tokyopop will publish the first volume this August, StarCraft: Frontline.

Because those of us that play the games didn't shell out tons of money to Blizzard already.

Licensing Hot Potato

Bandai announced at their New York Comic Con panel Friday that they have attained the rights to Gainax's Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, rights originally attained by ADV Films. Gurren Lagaan had been among the list of multiple anime titles dropped from the online catalogue in January and never reposted in February when some of the other axed titles returned.

In case you don't know, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is some crazy stuff. People living underground, crazy robots and a sniper-chick in a bikini. *nodnod*

I Huzzah in your general direction!

Okay, I'm going to try this whole "post en mass" thing and hope it works. I was looking over on JapanProbe and found almost the entire front page of news amusing. Apologies for the slew of short bits.

Nagano Torch Event Cancelled
In fear of similar Anti-China protests from around the world, an event that was to follow the Nagano leg of the Olympic torch relay has been cancelled due to security concerns. This is the first of the events that the city has had to cancel, which was cited as necessary “in order to concentrate on management of the torch relay.”

Schoolgirls v Cops
A group of junior high girls in Saitama Prefecture were arressted for assaulting a police officer after he scolded them for riding doubles on a non-doubles bicycle. The officer involved was shoved, then kicked, cursed and spat at before being able to arrest the girls.

In a related, but totally unscientific poll, Japanese junior high girls are deemed more frightening than even anime fans and robots. The girls recieved 508 of the 1143 votes as of very early morning April 17th (US Eastern Time). Anime fans (351) and robots (201) still beat the Japanese policeman, who only gained 83 votes.

OMGZ Free Anime!
Ah, but there's a catch. The anime, called Megumi, is about a thirteen-year-old named Yokota Megumi who disappeared on her way home from school in 1977. The culprits was not one of the usual suspects though, but North Korea. Yeah... *nods head slowly* ...politics. Either love 'em or hate 'em. The film can be found here as a free download to promote awareness of these kidnappings by the North Koreans. English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean are the available languages.
