Minami-ke Anime's 3rd Season Reportedly Green-Lit
A third season of the anime adaptation of Coharu Sakuraba's Minami-ke manga series has been reportedly green-lit in Japan. Minami-ke tells the story of three sisters who live on their own and depend on each other to solve whatever problems may arise. Sakuraba has been drawing Minami-ke in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine since 2004. The first season of Minami-ke (pictured at right) ran on TV Tokyo in 2007, while a second season ended wrapped up in March. Another Sakuraba title, Kyo no Gononi (Today in Class 5-2), has been made into a video series and is being animated for television this October as well.

Otakon Acknowledges Artist Alley Controversy
Otakon, North America's second-largest anime convention, has officially responded to a controversy that has arisen over the Artist Alley at this year's convention, which ran from August 8 to August 10. According to many attendees and artists, a single group purchased as many as 14 different tables and sold pieces drawn by the same person under several different names.
Matt Smiechkowski, the president of Otakorp, Inc. (Otakon's corporate parent), stated in a message posted on the Otakon website that the convention is aware of this controversy, but that Otakon staffers were not able to take any action regarding it during the convention. Under Otakon's policies, a single group is not allowed to book that many artist alley tables, but it is not clear whether artists were also prohibited from displaying their work at booths booked by other groups. Regardless, Otakon staff will be examining the table reservation and booking process to ensure that this sort of "rules-bending" is less likely to happen at future conventions.

New York Anime Fest Invites Iron Chef's Morimoto
The New York Anime Festival (NYAF) has announced that Masaharu Morimoto, the chef best known for his appearances on the Japanese and American versions of the Iron Chef television competitions, will appear at the convention on September 26. Morimoto will hold a question-and-answer session and a book signing on that day. His Manhattan restaurant, aptly named Morimoto, will then host the convention's official after party for all NYAF attendees, exhibitors, professionals, and press members on the evening of September 28.

Shokotan's Blog Hero Character Gets Manga in Magazine
The October issue (released on August 27) of Monthly Comic Dengeki Daioh magazine has announced that the Sukashikashipanman ~Manzara Demo Nai Daibōken~ hero manga will debut in the next issue with character designs by singer/voice actress Shoko Nakagawa (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Eyeshield 21). "Shokotan," as Nakagawa's fans have nicknamed her, created an illustration of a hero character based on her interest in sand dollars (sukashikashipan) in 2007. After showcasing the design on her blog and television appearances, Nakagawa turned the character in a mini-franchise with anime on mobile phone websites and even an official pastry bun. An anime project called Sukashikashipanman the Movie was just released on August 6. Nakagawa has drawn Sukashikashipanman manga in her blog, but the Comic Dengeki Daioh manga will be drawn by artist Arima Honda.

So following the success of DC Comic's Batman: Gotham Knight being done in an anime style, Marvel has decided to also undergo the anime treatment. Marvel is joining forces with Madhouse, a studio that produced most notably Vampire Hunter D, to bring 4 superheroes to the anime scene in Japan in 2010. Spiderman and Iron Man have been confirmed, but the other two are still an unknown.Not much is known about the actual content of the series yet, but it looks like they'll be giving their creators a lot of freedom to re-imagine the looks and back stories of characters. “It will create an entire parallel universe for Marvel,” said Simon Philips, the President of Marvel International.
The series will also be adapted into manga and available to download on Japanese cell phones. So far, there are no plans for a US release, but we all know that won't stop us from seeing it in some form or another.

Even though most of you probably heard something about this, I'm posting it anyways:
In a stunning upset victory, the Japanese softball team claimed their first ever gold medal in the sport, claiming it in the last year of competition for the time being.
The 3-1 game ended the USA's 22 game winning streak, which was their first loss after the 2000 Sydney Games. The USA softball team, notorious for pounding their competition into the dirt, was severely shaken at the loss. A pitching ace for Japan, coupled with a few minor slip-ups, was what lead to their downfall.
Yeah... softball. Whoo.[/sarcasm]

Oregon Man Says Son Borrowed Mature Manga from Library
KPTV, the Fox television affiliate in Portland, Oregon, reported on Tuesday on a man who says his 12-year-old son was able to borrow mature manga titles from a Multnomah County Library, even though they were shelved in the adult section. Rozz Rezabek said he discovered the manga in his son's room, and he noted the books were listed on the covers as "Mature: Ages 18+." KPTV showed Yuji Shiozaki's Battle Club and Battle Vixens manga in its video report. A library spokeswoman told the station that it does not restrict access to the adult section and that it is up to the parents to monitor their children's reading. While patrons can file a statement of concern at the library, Rezabek said he may discuss the matter with an attorney.

New Fullmetal Alchemist TV Anime Series Confirmed
The wraparound jacket band on the 20th volume of Hiromu Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist manga will confirm on Friday that a new television anime series is in the works. A new anime series was a topic of much fan discussion for several months, but it was thrust into a more public spotlight last month when a management document was purportedly leaked from the BONES anime studio. The document listed Fullmetal Alchemist animator Yasuhiro Irie as "Hagane 2 kantoku" (Iron/Fullmetal 2 director).

Bandai Visual Ships 100,000+ Geass R2 #1 Discs
The Japanese distributor Bandai Visual has announced on Friday that it shipped over 100,000 Blu-ray Discs and DVDs for the first volume of Sunrise's Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 robot anime sequel series. Like Macross Frontier last month, Code Geass R2 volume 1 began selling on both formats simultaneously on Friday. The first Code Geass R2 DVD was the bestselling DVD release in Japan for the last two days. The 100,000-plus-disc shipping statistic is 140% higher than the first shipment for the original Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion's first volume. All told, over 900,000 Code Geass discs have been shipped so far.
