ON DECEMBER 7th, 1941. WAVES OF 353 japanese bombers, fighters, and torpedo bomber attack American naval base at pearl harbor as well as 3 amry airfeild on the island. The attack came frome a japanese fleet out to see. Planes launched from 6 aircraft carriers was respinsible for the massive number of planes. The attack began at 7:20 AM. The american survice men were un prepared. The guns werent loaded and most were asleep or righting home. The attack sank four U.S. Navy battleships (two of which were raised and returned to service later in the war) and damaged four more. The Japanese also sank or damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, and one minelayer, destroyed 188 aircraft, and caused personnel losses of 2,402 killed[8] and 1,282 wounded. The power station, shipyard, maintenance, and fuel and torpedo storage facilities, as well as the submarine piers and headquarters building (also home of the intelligence section) were not hit. Japanese losses were minimal, with 29 aircraft and five midget submarines lost, and 65 servicemen killed or wounded. One Japanese sailor was captured. The most devistating hit was from a japanese high level bomber wich hit the ammo storage on the USS Arizona battleship. The bomb set it all of and blew the entire ship in two. Killing 1200 men instantly. The USS oklahoma battleship was hit by 7 torpedos and turned completely upside down. A submarine was spotted in the harbor entrance and was sunk by a destroyer before the attack however comfermation on it being a sub was not able to reach the captian and it was tolate to prevent the attack. The planes were seen on radar before the attack but it was beleived to be a group of B-17 bomberd coming from the main land. In the attack we managed to get 37 fighters up but only 6 were state of the art the rest were not much use against the Japanese Zero fighters wich at the time were the best in the world. This attack finally prepelled America in world war 2.

My grandpa was offered a job to work at pearl harbor to make planes. He turned it down. That was probably the best decision he made. He wouldve arrived at the pearl harbor a week before the attack. he wouldve been killed.
