Chapter One:Rabecca
Sarah was trying to sleep in her small bed, as she heard the sirens that play over, and over again, daily, like a broken CD on repeat. She tossed and turned in her bed. "Man...I wish I could make them shut up already. They've been going since early this morning..." Sarah mumbled to herself. "BOO!" she heard her brother, Jake call from above on the top buck. Sarah shrieked and fell off her bed, and hit her head on the dresser.
"Jake! You jerk!" Sarah said, throwing her pillow at her brother, who was laughing at her. "Sarah! Jake! Go to bed!" Dave, their father shouted at them. Sarah lives in a small, two room apartment with her mom, dad, and older brother. She has lived in Chicago all her life, but that apartment for only two years. And she was beginning to loose her mind-there was no room! Everyone was loosing their mind. Sarah fell asleep after hitting her head on the dresser, and getting back on her bed.
Sarah awoke the next day with a headache. She was on the verge of loosing her mind-and she needed to tell some one. It was a Sunday, raining, and all was quiet. Jake was doing homework, Victoria was sewing, Dave was reading the paper, and Sarah was supposed to be reading her book. "THATS IT! I CANT HANDLE IT! Mom, we need a new apartment-we need space, our privacy!" Sarah blurted out, annoyed that she had to be the first to say anything. "She's got a point mom, I hate sharing a room. You mix our socks, and she leaves her girl crap everywhere." Jake said. "You leave your dirty underware everywhere, and I keep stepping on your stupid dolls." Sarah complained. "Theyre collectable action figures, unlike you and your retarded books-theyre not even read the right way!" Jake said, reffering to her manga. "They're called 'manga' and if you took the time to listen in class, you would probobly know its the origanl Jappanese format, dumbask." Sarah replied."Young lady, I will not tolorate that kind of talk comming from your mouth! But, you are right, we do need more space." Victoria broke the fight. "I'll look into it." Dave said, not looking from his paper.
Sarah tried to spend as much time with her friends all that month, for, it was going to be the last month she saw them. Sumer was comming up, and she was moving. Sarah gave away most of her things, and got every way possible to contact her friends. As much as she hated where she lived, she would still miss her friends. Sarah, Jake, Vicotria, and Dave all got into the car, and drove off. Sarah and Jake ended up falling asleep three hours into the ride.
Sarah awoke in her new house, on her bed. She felt Deja Vu. Like she was there before. She realized it was early morning, and left a note on the...Everywhere in the whole house-seeing how she didnt get a chance to pick her room (even though she was happy with it), or to explore her house before it was bought-this was her first time seeing it! Sarah began to walk around town-to explore. She was walking down a street. It was old-they never changed the bricks to pavement for the roads. Everything was old, especialy the building. Sarah was truely amazed with how beautiful everthing looked. (She discovered her love for history back in the third grade). Just as Sarah was about to go into a shop, she heard the first noise she's heard comming from this little town. "Heeey!!" some one shouted.
Sarah turned around to see a girl long with rich brown hair that was straight, bangs, green eyes, an orange t-shirt and some shorts coming over to her. She raced over, and then put her hands behind her back, her right hand holding her left arm. "Ya lost?" she asked Sarah. Sarah looked around and realized that she was lost. "Come to think of it..Yeah, I kinda am." Sarah responded. "I could tell, your in the abandoned part of the town." said the girl. "Hey, whats your name?" asked the girl. "When exchanging names, you are to give your name first." Sarah reminded her. "Oop!" said the girl. She closed her eyes, and knocked on her head three times. "My name is Rabecca Gormez." Rabecca staited. "And my name is Sarah Wills." responded Sarah. "Come one, lemme show you around." Rabecca said, taking Sarah by her right hand, and pulling her to God knows where.
Rabecca showed Sarah the park, all the cool hang out spots, the school, the library, the little grocery mart, and the lake. Sarah and Rabecca went out to get some ice-cream. While they sat at the lake, throwing rocks into it, as the sun set, Sarah asked "So, what were you doing in the abandoned part of the town?" "I was looking. I like going there because it makes me feel relaxed, and it's pretty." Rabecca responded, finishing her tasty frozen treat. "And, where did you get the bruise, what happened?" Sarah asked, looking at the bruise on Rabecca's left arm. "Oh, that? I was playing catch with my dad, and he is a terrible aim." Rabecca said, laughing. "Ouch. Looks like it hurt." Sarah responded. "Kind of. Not as much as you would think. You see, it was one of those types of getting hurt, where it left a real big mark, but barely hurt." Rabecca said. "Ah. Those are weird. I wonder how that happens." Sarah said. There was a vow of silence as the girls looked into the scenerey in front of them "Oh crap! Mom!" Sarah shouted, breaking the silence. "Hm?" Rabecca was confused. "What time is it? Mom is going to kill me if I'm late! It's bad enough I left without permission!" Sarah was worried. Rabbecca stood up, and looked at the ground. she saw her shadow, she turned to the point where her left was facing west, the setting sun. She looked at her shadow, and said "It's seven thirty."
"Gyaaaah!! Im ganna be late!" Sarah finsihed her ice-cream, and began to run. "Wait!" Rabecca called. "What?" asked Sarah. "Do you even know where you're going?" There was a silence. "Uuuhh..No, not really." Sarah admitted. "I'll walk ya home! I've lived here all my life, I know all the places in it, and how to get there from pretty much every route." Rabecca offered, walking to Sarah. "Thanks. I live on 32 Mockingbird Lane." Rabecca walked Sarah home.
"Sarah Wills!" said her mom, angrily. "Please, Mrs.Wills, It was my fault! I was showing her around and we lost track of time." Rabecca was standing up for Sarah. " ..Er...We didn't even have a watch or phone or anything." Rabecca mumbled, looking down, and scratching her right cheek with her right index finger. "Oh. I wasn't mad. Im just irratated because her brother is a retard." Mrs.Wills said. Sarah and Rabecca giggled. "Well, thank you for showing her around, uh. I'm sorry what was your name again?" Mrs.Wills tried to thank Rabecca. "Ope!" Rabecca closed her eyes and knocked on her head three times. Rabecca closed her left eye, and, with a smile, said "My name is Rabecca Gormez, if you have any questions about the town, just ask me! My phone number is 555-4936." bending over, with her right keg stuck out, to shake Mrs.Wills's hand. "Well, thank you Rabecca, for showing my daughter around, and bringing her back home safely." Victoria thanked Rabecca properly. "Nooo plroblem!" Rabecca giggled and walked off, waving good-bye to Sarah.
"Well, I see we've made a friend, now have we?" Victoria smiled, as she was setting the table for dinner. "Yup." said Sarah, as she put a glass next to her father's plate. Sarah ate dinner, showered, read a four short stories from her book, The Cold, Cold Hand, and then drifted into a deep, comfortable sleep.
Chapter Two: Smile
After Rabecca dropped Sarah off at her house, she began walking home. It was late, but she had nothing to worry about until she got home. "Hey mom...I made a friend today. Her name is Sarah Wills...I think things are finaly ganna be better. It's thanks to her that I'm not there with you. I'll give it another month or so. But I feel happier-like there is a point now. Besides, we wouldn't want to make Sarah sad now, do we? No. She's a kind person. Oh! She asked about my bruise. Not that I don't trust her, but just that it's a bit to early to tell eachother that kind of stuff...So I lied. I know you've always hated me lying-or anybody lying for that matter. And, Im sorry. But, I'll do my best not to lie anymore! Okay?" Rabecca stopped. She looked down, and felt terribly sad. "I promised myself that I wouldn't. hm. Geuss that was a lie to." tears began to flow down her cheeks. "Nope! Smile! Smile for mom! She's watching...She's still watching...so...so smile..." Rabecca pulled herself together, and began to walk home.
She got to her house and stopped at the door. The lights were on, and she could hear the T.V. "I probobly shouldn't have stopped..Now I'm even later." Rabecca said to herself. She had no emotion as she oppened her door-she had learned that it was best to show now emotion, even in her voice. "Dad. I'm home." Rabecca said, emotionless, almost like a robot. "And where have you been?" asked her father, a bottle of Whiskey in his hands. "...I was walking around, showing a new girl around town. After I walked around a bit myself." Rabecca responded. "You little liar. You went out to have fun, and not tell me, didn't you!? You made friends with that girl! You know you're not supposed to be friends with anyone! You'll just burden them! You were a mistake! And Can't do anything right! You'll just make her mess up to!" Don, Rabecca's father said. "You've been drinking...Haven't you?" Rabecca said, still looking at her feet, as she was the moment she came in.
Don swung at her. Rabecca fell onto the ground, shaking, scared, hurt, sad. "You're god damn right I have you little bitch! Do something about it you lying whore!" Sarah tried to ignore the pain, and the shaking of her legs, and tried to get up. She knew it wasn't the best thing to do, but if she were to stay down, her father might have killed her. "I'm sorry." she whispered. "I've failed you mom." She whispered again, trying not to cry. For, if she showed any sign of weakness, her father would beat it out of her...Like he did to Laura. "What was that you fucking slut!?" Her father asked, after he took another drink. "I said sorry father. I was out of my place to talk without being spoken to first." Rabecca said, holding back her tears, as much as she possibly could. "Your damn right!" He swung at Rabecca again. This time, before she fell to the ground, Don grabbed her by the hair. "Knowing what would happen if she tried to resist, or tried to get away, she just took it. He dronk the rest of his Whiskey, and then broke the bottle over her head. "You slut! Go fucking make me some dinner!" He said, after pulling her up so they were eye-to-eye, and slapping her. He dropped her onto the ground, where she landed on the broken glass.
"Y...Yes...Yes sir." Rabecca tried her best not to say or do anything. Mistake talking at all. "Are you..crying?" "NO!" Rabecca got wide-eyed, and shouted fear in her voice, not even thinking. Don shouted, "YOU GOD DAMN WUSS!" He punched her in the stomach, and Rabecca fell down. He began cicking her while she was down. She tried to think that she wasn't home, that she was at the lake...Or with her mom. After about ten minutes of being beaten while she was on the ground, Don pulled her by the hair, and once again smaked her. "You are a real pice of shit, you little slut! No go fucking make me some god damn dinner!" Don once again, let her fall onto the broken glass. This time, he spit on her. Ignoring the shaking in her legs, and the pain, she got right to dinner. If she were to try to clean up her wounds first, he would only beat her more, because she was disobeying. After she made dinner, all was nothing but hell.
"The fucking turkey was dry as hell." Don mumbled as she tried to go upstairs, to her room. "Sorry sir." she said, looking down. "Sorry isn't going to fucking cut it! You ruined a fucking perfectly good meal! You bitch!" He took the plate, and shoved it into her face. After about twenty minutes of holding it in, and pretending to be passed out, she finaly heard her father fall asleep on the couch. Rabecca could tell that Don was asleep because she could hear him snoring. She quietly walked upstairs, and took a shower, in the cold, cold, water. Knowing that if she turned on the hot water, the steam would leak through the house, and wake up Don. He might call over Charels again. She feared that while she was pretending to pass out, Don would call Charels.
Rabecca snuck into her room, and put her mother's necklace on. "Mom...I did it again...I made daddy angry..And I lied...Im sorry...I know you hate it when I lie...I would do it again tonight...But I don't want to grab dad's razor...Im afraid. Please mom, forgive me. It's not like I like lying or anything...I just...I just don't want to be taken away. I love father. I know, it doesn't make sence. But, I mainly don't want to leave beacuse...Because you were here." Rabecca said, as she began to cry. "I'm sorry mom...I don't want you to think that giving birht to me was poinltess when I say this, but....Why didn't you take me with you? I miss you mom...I really do..And..I try...I try real hard. I...I failed you..by lying, and crying." Rabecca tried to keep her sobs to herself, fearing her father would wake up. "No. Stop crying right now! Other people have it much worse! Smile! Smile damn you! Just...For mom..." Rabecca began to cry more. "Why...Why can't you smile for your mom!? Why!?" Rabecca said to herself, trying to keep her sobs and shouting to herself. "Sweety, we love you. No matter what. Take this necklace, and never take it off." Rabecca recalled her mother saying to her.
"I'd rather be neglelcted than to deal with this even more..." Rabecca said, smiling, as she fell asleep to the picture of her mother, Luara. Rabecca woke up to the sound of her door opening. She still pretended to be asleep. It was Charles. "No..Please..Not Charels." Rabecca thought. "Wake up hunny." Charles said to Rabecca. "Why?" she thought. "Oh..Hey." Rabecca tried to smile. Charels began to kiss her. "Why? What have I done?" Rabecca thought. "I love you're long hair." Charles said to her. "Th-thanks." Rabecca said. "Alright sweet cheeks, I talked nicely to you now start stripping. NOW." Charles said. All was silent for a while. "No..I...I don't want to." Rabecca said, trying to resist. Charels slapped her, and she fell to the ground. He got on top of her and began to unbotton her shirt....
After about ten minutes, Charles left. "Slut." he said, walking off. Rabecca got dressed again, and sat on her bed, in the corner. "Mommy....Mommy..I..I want you home...I...I want to see you again..Mom....Why..? I love you Mommy....I really do..And I miss you. None of this is you're fault...I could've ran while I had the chance..But I didn't want to leave you. I should've listened...It's all my fault. You were only worried for me. So, you told me to run. You couldn't help but to sound so worried...And father...he just lost it...Im sorry." Rabecca said. "No! Smile! It happened seconds ago, but its still in the past! Think about tomarrow! Yeah...I'll...I'll go to the lake with Sarah agian! And it will all be better! I know it will. Rabecca said, falling asleep with a smile, next to the picture of her mom.
Chapter Three: Pass
Sarah woke up drooling on her pillow. "Woah...I've never gotten a better sleep before. The country is great!" Sarah said to herself. She took a shower, ate breakfast and began to unpack more of her stuff. With an entire morning of fixing up her room to be just the way she wanted it, she ate lunch, and the door bell rang. Sarah answered it, and There stood Rabecca. She was in her swim suit, her hair up in a pony tail. "Come on, get you're swim suit! I say we go to the lake!" Rabecca said with a smile, with such energey. "Okay! Come in, Imma change and grab some sun screen and stuff. "Okay." Rabecca sat on the couch.
Rabecca had covered most of her scars and brusies with some make-up-the good stuff that doesn't come off easily. After Sarah and Rabecca played in the lake, they went for ice cream (still in their swim suits) and walked around the old abandoned part of town. They laughed as they told stories of shows that they have seen, and some funny icncodents that they have seen, thought of, or heard. "Do you think you could spend the night?" Sarah asked. Rabecca got wide eyed. "Sure. Lemme go ask." Rabecca said. "I'll come with you!" said Sarah. "Sorry, but dad will get angry if I bring home friends without asking him first. I'll be over at you house in an hour, if not, then call me." Rabecca said. "Okay then." The girls bidded fare-well and went home.
Rabecca got home, and gathered her things. "Dad. Im spending the night at Charles's." Rabecca lied. "Okay." was all he said back. "I'll be home around two." Rabecca said. "Fine." Don responed. "Rabecca got to Sarah's house, and they ate, watched scary movies, talked, and stayed up all night. It was her first sleep over-her first friend. She knew her father would find out eventually that she has a friend...Thats the only thing she ever feared...That...and Charles.
The time has passed, and Sarah and Rabecca had became great friends. They even had those little matching charm braclets. They thought that they would be friends forever, they were practicky sisters. So, Rabecca decided to tell Sarah the truth...
"Sarah..We need to talk. I'm sorry for lying all this time....Those bruises...are by my dad...but..it wasn't an accident. He doesn't even know I have a friend. He never wanted a kid, a girl non the less. He's ben abusing me for a while...And his brother...Charles..." Rabecca began to cry. She told Sarah about Charles. "Also...My dad killed my mom. He fought with her, and I came down, to make sure mom didn't get hurt. She saw me, and told me to run. Talking when you're not spoken to, and showing emotion are the worst things you can do around him. I saw it happen... The last thing mom ever said to me was "It's not your fault...Smile..And live...for me." then she died. She died before I had a chance to call anyone. I was terified. He stabbed her over and over again. then he moved onto me. He treats me like crap." Rabecca told Sarah about her father, and every thing else. Rabecca began to cry, and Sarah hugged her.
Months had passed, and they had become greater friends. They truely were like sisters. One day, Sarah was eating dinner and the phone rung. It was Rabecca. "Help me." was all she said. Sarah and Rabecca had made it clear, not to tell Sarah's parents about Don or Charels. Sarah dropped the phone and got wide-eyed. "I gatta go." Sarah said, at first to herself. "I gatta go!" Sarah shouted to her family. "Sarah Wills, you never leave during family meals! You better have an explanation for this!" Victoria said. "I will, when I get back. Theres no time to explain, but I have to go help Rabecca!" Sarah shouted, as she ran out the door. She got on her bike, and went full speed ahead, to Rabecca's house. "Please...Not now...No." Sarah thought. "RABECCAA!!" Sarah shouted, as she opened Rabecca's door. She saw Rabecca, lying on the floor. With the phone in her bloody hand.
Sarah dropped her bag, and ran to her. "Rabbecca!" Sarah shouted. Rabecca was cold. "Thanks, Sarah...For comming. For being there...For being my only friend." Rabecca died that summer. Sarah said her last fare-well. "Rabecca was a sweet girl. She truely was. She still managed to smile, and have so much energy....She...She hoped for the best when the worst was happening...She never gave up..She...She was the happiest girl I knew...And..So quickly..So...So sudden...If the bruises weren't there, you would've never geussed...We will all dearly miss her..Rabecca Gormez, we all hope you are in a better place, and that...That you and your mother, Luara are finaly re-united. We will miss you."
They began to burry Rabecca, and Sarah cried, the whole time, even as she placed two sets of flowers on there; a yellow and pink set to show how happy Rabecca always was, and a black and white one, to show how sad Sarah was for her loss. Sarah knew that Rabecca wouldn't want her to mourn over her death, but she couldn't help it. For the first month, Sarah cried, deeply for her friend. Then, accepted that she was gone. No one knew how Luara and Rabecca died. When Sarah told everyone, and had the evidence to back it up, Charles and Don were put in prison. Sarah felt that Rabecca and Luara could finaly rest in peace.
They were both sentanced life in prison. Charels was murdered in prison, and Don escaped. Sarah was comming home from the mini mart. She was being chased, and made a wrong turn some where, and had no clue where she was. She heard a sound, and just began to run. She was stopped by a figure in front of her. As the clouds moved away from the full moon, she saw who it was. Sarah got wide-eyed. "Don" she said, fearful.
The people of Hillsville were interrupted by two gunshots that were fired. Jake, Sarah's brother visited his little sisters grave. "Sarah Wills March 31st, 1998-October 19th, 2008. Loving sister, and great friend". Sarah was burried next to RAbecca, whose headstone read "Rabecca Gormez. June 1st, 1998-August 18th, 2008. Wonderful daughter, and best friend."
In the after life, Sarah and Rabecca met up again, and Sarah met Luara. She was sad, and missed her family, but now she is happy, to be with her friend...Besides, who can't be happy in heaven?
