We here at Brutal Game Review Team were deeply impressed with Fallout 3 and what Bethesda Studios provided to the gaming community in this game of epic win. Once again, we'll try and give a review without spoiling too much.
Fallout 3 is about a resident of Vault 101 trying to find his/her niche in the Capitol Wasteland; Washington D.C. in post-apocalyptic form, who will eventually become the savior or destroyer of the Capitol Wasteland.
The overall gameplay is greatly varied on how you wish to play the game. The peeps at Bethesda have created a open environment for you to get lost in. In this environment is a series of story-related quests and a huge variety of side-quests to where you, the player, can ultimately choose the outcome of those quests. The combat can be slow or fast-paced depending on how you choose to deal with each encounter with Super Mutants, Raiders, Ghouls, etc.
Bethesda has created a tool that with greatly increase your abilities to kick-ass: VATS mode. VATS mode is literally a device that lets you pick which body part of an enemy you want to blow off. The results speak for themselves.
Like Oblivion, you are given a wide variety of perks that you can upgrade your character with to further increase his/her effectiveness. So you have a nice blend of RPG/shooter elements in Fallout 3.
You have a decent physics engine. Although most of the world isn’t destructible, the graphics and physics engine more than makes up for it.
The A.I. is pretty decent, too. Although you’ll have certain moments when the enemies are complete retards, such moments are extremely rare. There are a nice wide variety of baddies spread throughout the Capitol Wasteland, all with their own unique looks, characteristics, strengths and weaknesses.
The health system is pretty simple: get hurt, patch yourself up. Get sick, go see a doctor. Get your legs blasted off, have your relatives find a nice grave for you to be buried in.
Here are some of the main highlights that we find most enjoyable in the game. First off: WEAPONS!!! The game gives you a huge arsenal of basic and unique weapons, to shoulder-mounted weapons of mass destruction. The Capitol Wasteland is full of these goodies so you’ll never be in short supply. We like to collect nearly every weapon available in the game and then just stockpile a crapload of ‘em. Ammunition is also plentiful (with is also another thing we like to stockpile, because you can never have too much ammo).
Second: APPAREL!!! There are, like the weapons, a huge variety of apparel that you can outfit your character with. The Brotherhood of Steel power armor = wearing sex. You can find apparel anywhere. If you’re running around in your skivvies and need some clothes, just kill a raider or a wastelander and strip ‘em. Wuala! You have clothes!
Third: VATS Mode!!! We know we already explained what it was earlier, but we can’t help it. We just love the idea of epic slow motion death sequences of dismemberment and blood explosion extraordinaire.
Now for the story. Fallout 3 follows directly after the storyline of the original Fallout game, only set on the East coast instead of the West. Set 200 years after the nuclear holocaust of humanity, you find yourself as a Vault 101 resident. You are kicked out of your vault (courtesy of Vault-Tech) and forced to wander the ruins of Washington D.C. because your father left the vault, which you had no knowledge of. Now you have to explore the Capitol Wasteland in search of your bastard father. Thanks a lot Dad.
The characters are very animated and the voice acting is great. However, Bethesda seems to like to use the same voice actors for different characters over and over again. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, it just can be annoying at times. You walk into a small neighborhood and meet and old guy with an old accent, then walk into a ruined town and meet another old guy who looks completely different, but sounds exactly like the other old guy. You can’t help but say, “didn’t we just met?”
The scripting is incredible. It’s involving, funny, witty, and genius. It really draws you into the Fallout universe when you listen to the lines that these people say. Bravo!
Now that we got the positive things out the way it’s time for the negative:
BUGS!!! LOTS OF BUGS!!! Glitches everywhere! We find ourselves walking around and discovering holes or gaps in the world or enemies that walk around with half their body beneath the dirt! Also the game freezes because it sneezed or something. You have instances where you load previously saved games and find that half your inventory is missing. One particular bug that I discovered is that Fallout 3 will delete saved game data of other games! It is no coincidence. Campaign progress of Gears of War 2 is gone, the A.I. in Halo 3 have been stupefied, being demoted in Rainbow Six Vegas 2, it’s one thing after the other.
Then there’s the downloadable content. Even though the DLC for Fallout 3 is full of win, it’s also full of bugs and glitches too. Bethesda has been, instead of releasing patches for the game, shoving out DLC filled with bugs. But that was a few months ago. Fortunately, Bethesda has been taking action lately by making sure your copy of Fallout 3 is constantly updated on Xbox LIVE, which should get rid of , or at least tone down, most of the bugs you’ll encounter in the game. So make sure you update. If you don’t, then you’ll stay in bug central.
So overall we give this game a 5 out of 5. Even though the game is buggy, it is still full of win! The wonderful gameplay, and a retro/classical soundtrack to boot is enough to have you overlook the bugs while playing it. Plus, the updates for the game help keep the bugs in check so we forgive you Bethesda. We forgive you.
A while ago we've obtained one of the coolest games we've have ever played in a while. No, it's not Resident Evil 5, or Left 4 Dead, or Star Wars the Force Unleashed, or Castle Crashers, or Duke Nukem 3D, or even Waffle Maker Extreme 2. It's an overlooked game called, Bullet Witch. A game that a lot of game reviews labeled as "uninspiring and mediocre" and giving it low scores. We, however, would like to differ. Greatly. And after having played this game we would like to give you guys a review on it. And we'll try not to spoil too much of it for you:
Bullet Witch is about a a girl named Alicia who is a "witch", as some may call her and looks nothing like the girl winking icon shown earlier, trying to rid the world of demons who have been causing widespread destruction and death across the globe. Evil souls, known as the Geist, are overrunning and killing off the human populace. Armed with a powerful array of spells and a weapon called the Gun-Rod, it is up to her to save humanity from extinction.
The overall gameplay is fast, fun (if you like pummeling hapless enemies with infinite ammo), and explosive. The world around you is somewhat destructible: trees break and fall, buildings collapse, vehicles explode, garbage bins get ripped to shreds, etc. It lacks a physics engine like rag-doll and collision animation, but if you can still be able to melee a Geist soldier with the Gun-Rod and have him polevault over a fence, role down a flight of stairs, and smack into a brick wall then, well, that more than makes up for it.
Although the A.I. isn't bright, that's not necessarily a bad thing. It just makes it easier to kick their asses. And everyone loves to kick ass. But still, new enemies that you encounter throughout the game that are harder to kill (if you're an inexperienced player) and a wide variety of them, we might add, makes up for the bad A.I.
For the health system you slowly regenerate health after taking damage and the magic meter also regenerates by killing enemies. It's almost like a game that gives you a health insurance plan.
Here's some of the really cool things about Bullet Witch that sells the game (which also happen to be the things we enjoy most). And that's Alicia's Gun-Rod, agility, and spells.
The Gun-Rod is like the gun equivalent of a swiss army knife. It's about the size of Alicia's body and can be held by one arm for easy maneuverability. The Gun-Rod can transform its appearance to take the shape of different weapons. There are four different forms the Gun-Rod can take: an assault rifle, shotgun, sniper cannon, and a minigun. Of course they're really called (save the shotgun): machinegun, cannon and gatling ...but we like what we call 'em better. These weapons can be upgraded to further increase the effectiveness of the Gun-Rod. All of this in one package with the added bonus of infinite ammo. What could be better?
Alicia's agility doesn't have a real impact on gameplay, but it is helpful for dodging bullets, rockets, snipers, meteors, etc., reaching certain areas, and you look good doing it.
Alicia's spells are helpful (and don't let game magazine reviews tell you otherwise). They are big, flashy, and destructive. But that's just the "Great Magic", as they're called. Regular magic allows you to spice things up a bit. You can summon a wall to protect yourself and your allies from incoming bullets and block the path of enemies, you can throw rose petals that make spears erupt from the ground and shiskibab groups of enemies within its radius, call in the elements to change your Gun-Rod's ammo types into fire, wind, light, and electricity, revive fallen allies with your blood, blast things away with your will, and distract your opposition by unleashing a flock of ravens on them. Now how can these spells NOT be helpful, huh? Stupid "Official Xbox Magazine".
We will, however, say that the Rose Spear spell kinda sucks. A lot. Your foes are constantly moving about like a bunch of idiots while you frantically throws rose pedals here and there in the hopes of having at least one of them being skewered by the spear volley of death. But you fail miserably and just resort to just mowing them down with your machinegun in the end. Or you call down a bolt of lightning down on their sorry, half-dead asses.
And now for the story aspect of the game. Although it's not original, such as humanity's inevitable extinction, it does add the interesting twist that demons are causing the chaos instead of aliens. The story is solid, but we're gonna have to agree with some of the other game reviews: the game was short. But then again so was Halo 3's campaign and they weren't bitching about that. Anyways, continuing on. The characters, while not that many, are interesting, but, like most games made in Japan where the original Japanese voices are replaced with an English dub, the voice acting is kinda bad save for Alicia's English voice actor, Sarah Natochenny. She did a good job! The same with Rodger Parsons who plays Darkness, Alicia's companion. He did good too!
But although the story is good the scripting is incredibly bad. You have multiple cinematics popping up with Max Cougar (who happens to be one of the characters in the game) saying things that are either ridiculous or obvious. Also their is possibly a love relationship that's developing between him and Alicia, but it's too bleh! to truly tell.
So overall we give this game a 4 out of 5. The controls are smooth, although aiming can sometimes be troublesome but that can easily be adjusted, the gameplay is fun, and the fact that you use a broom that's shaped like a gun that can transform into different weapons and pwn all is totally awesome. Sure this game may have quite a bit of bad moments, but we see a lot of potential in Bullet Witch and if a sequel could ever be made we're sure it'll be better than the first. But, unfortunately we'll never see a sequel because the game was discontinued due to the fact the the game's developers are too busy taking a piss.
