Chapter Sixteen: A Good Day, But What Was That?

I walked home slowly after I left Kuori’s. His mom seemed happy we were such good friends, but still not nearly as happy as my mom was. She honestly made me feel awkward when she talked about Kuori. It was never like we were just friends to her, we were always going to go out in her mind. I walked by a tiny store on the corner of the street and walked in. I saw a cheap little box of chocolate by the register and grabbed it, and paid for it. I figured I would give it to Kuori tomorrow, maybe he would go to school. I got home and told Mom and dad good night, and immediately went to bed because I was really tired.

I woke up and stretched. I felt like it was going to be a good day already, and I hopped out of bed happily. I got dressed in my favorite outfit and my hair straightened out with ease. I went out and Smiled at mom and dad as I grabbed an apple. The grinned and I had Kuoris chocolate hidden in the bag so mom couldn’t see it. I skipped, literally, skipped to his house and knocked quietly on the door. As usual his mom answered the door and smiled. “Hello Miyuki. Kuori is still sleeping, so I think he’s staying home another day.”

“Oh, that’s ok. I bought him something, can I go back and put it in his room?”

“Sure.”

“Thank you!” I quietly walked to his room and set the chocolate on his nightstand. He shifted and I smiled. “Hope you are feeling better when you wake up. I’ll text at lunch, like usual.” I carefully brushed some hair out of his face and shut his door quietly behind me as I walked out. I walked to school and got a hundred on my homework, I found out I got a perfect test score on my last math test, which was a victory I got mastery on it in the first place, and the snobby girl I didn’t like left for her vacation the night before, so it was amazing. I got to lunch and didn’t go into the bathroom to text.

Hey, how are you feeling?

I shoved my phone in my pocket and ate what lunch I had left, and finished out my day in school. We had no homework and I was glad I didn’t have to take anything back to Kuori.

I went to his house after school and his mom answered the door before I could even knock. “Come on in Miyuki.” She smiled. I did and went straight to Kuori’s room.

“Knock knock?” I opened the door slowly. He jumped and fell out of his bed.

“Kuori!” I rushed over to his side. “Are you ok? I’m sorry.”

“It’s fine, don’t apologize. I shouldn’t have been sleeping on the edge of the bed.”

“Oh no, I woke you up? Now I really do feel bad.” I folded my hands in front of me.

“No, I was half awake and half asleep.”

“Oh, ok.” I took his hand and helped him up.

“So how did your day go?”

“Wonderful!” I smiled looking up at him.

“That’s good.” I gave him a hug. He hugged back and then suddenly moved away. He turned and started coughing. “Sorry about that.” He apologized.

“It’s ok.” I smiled.

“I didn’t want to cough on you.”

“I understand, it’s ok.” I reached out for him again.

“What’s wrong?” He blinked.

“I-I just wanted a hug, it was a great day, but I didn’t have anyone to be with.”

“Oh…ok.” He hugged me and I smiled and leaned up so I could whisper in his ear.

“You should be hugging me anyway, I didn’t bring you any work to do.”

“Thank you, You know you could of though”

“I can’t give you something we didn’t get.” I breathed.

“I realize that Miyuki.” I got off my toes and looked at him.

“Oh.”

“What was the oh for?” He asked.

“You said I could have brought you work. What work? We weren’t assigned anything.”

“Well, obviously.” I pushed him back.

“Smart ass.” I pouted. He coughed violently, and I blinked and looked at him. I saw his hair go red, then back to blond, and back and forth. He looked at me and his eyes changed too. I gasped. “Kuori, what’s wrong with you?” He shook his head and looked away. I ran over to him. “Stop doing this, it’s scaring me. You look like Zero when your hair gets red.” He didn’t stop. “Kuori, please!” His coughing fit finally stopped and nothing seemed to be wrong with him. “Kuori, what was that?” I asked.

“It was a coughing fit.” He answered simply.

“No, it looked like you were going back and forth between something. You looked like Zero.” I answered.

“That’s crazy, maybe you just have Zero on your mind so you were seeing things.” He waved at me and sat on his bed.
“I know what I saw Kuori, now tell me the truth, what is going on?” I asked and he started to mutter something that I couldn’t really make out. “Speak up Kuori.”

“Na ta sa ree so me.” He said and stared at me. Those words echoed in my mind. Kuori stood up and bent down to whisper something in my ear. “Forget everything that you just saw.” He whispered and I got really dizzy and felt someone catch me as I fell forward. I felt really tired and I couldn’t fight it. I fell asleep.

I woke up and looked around. I was in Kuori’s room, but Kuori wasn’t there. I looked down at my lap and there was a math book laying across it. I sat up and saw a paper of half finished homework that was due today sitting on his desk. “Did I fall asleep?” I muttered.

“Well it’s about time you woke up.” I jumped a bit when I heard Kuori.

“Did I fall asleep?” I asked him. He nodded.

“Yeah, so I stopped doing my homework and left the room.” He answered.

“How are you feeling?” I asked.

“I feel a lot better than I did earlier today. I think I might be able to go to school tomorrow.” He smiled.

“That’s good. You don’t sound as stuffy as you did, which is great.” I said closing the math book.

“So are you staying for dinner again tonight or are you going to go home and get more sleep?”

“I think I’m going to go home tonight.” I replied.

“Alright, I’ll walk you home, that’s the least I can do for everything that you’ve done for me.” We walked out to the hall and got our shoes on. “Mom I’m going to take Miyuki home.”

“Ok, dinner will be ready when you get home. She answered and then we left.

“I figured since I wasn’t at school today I could at least walk you home.”

“Thank you. I appreciate that.” I smiled and put my hands behind my head. “Today has been a good day.”

“Yea, I’m glad you aced that test by the way.” Kuori said.

“Thank you and you better eat more than you did last night mister. You’re skin and bones as it is.” I commented poking him in the stomach.

“I will, don’t worry.” He walked me to the door. “Well, I’ll see you tomorrow.” He waved and walked away. He stopped at the end of the driveway.

“What’s wrong?” I asked. Then I heard him sneeze and I laughed. “Good night Hana!” I laughed. He turned around.

“Haha very funny.” He smiled and waved once more then continued walking back to his house. I shool my head and walked in. My mom was at the door.

“Yes?” I asked as I took off my shoes.

“He’s such a nice boy, why don’t you as him out?” She asked.

“Mom, we’re best friends and I don’t want to ruin that relationship. Besides, we don’t even look at each other that way.” I answered.

“Well, keep thinking about it and sooner or later you’ll come to realize that you two were meant for each other. “ My mom said as I ran up the stairs.
