Opening up

~Echo~

"Echo, you look flustered. If you don't want others to know we could go outside and talk about it," Shadow said. I bit my lip in frustration and partly in guilt. He had told me his past but I was so hesitant to let him in on my life. "Okay," I sighed in defeat. He grabbed my hand and we walked toward the door.

The sky was grey; the breeze cool as it brushed along my face. I looked over at Shadow he stared into the air. He looked at me; his golden eyes hard. "Echo, ya know when I told you about my past," He spoke but then paused, thinking. "You said you knew how it felt. How could you have?" He asked. I collapsed against the wall sliding down until I hit the ground. Shadow crouched down and sat beside me; waiting for an answer. I reached into my bag and slid the pill case out of it putting it into his hand. "This is why I ran to the bathroom. It's Percodan a strong pain killer." I explained; Shadow turned the bottle over in his hand. "Why do take these?" He asked.

"It happened seven years ago; I lived in a forest with my pack we lived in peace and for a time I was happy." My eyes grew dark as I recalled it. "But one day hunters came they wanted us mostly for our unique coats...the greedy bastards. They were everywhere; they even began torching the forest so there was no hope of escape. I watched my mother die; she was running toward me then all the sudden she just went limp." I squeezed my legs. "I couldn't move I just stood there as he came toward me. I closed my eyes waiting for the bullet to tear apart my heart. The explosion was deafening but I felt nothing. I opened my eyes to see that my father had thrown himself in front of me. I honestly tried to help him but he kept saying it was too late for him. He told me I had to pick up and keep moving forward. The hunter came back and in the last moments of his life my father did everything to protect me even killing one of the hunters so I could escape before they got him too." Tears streamed down my face my voice shook slightly as I talked. "I ran barely dodging the bullets as they came but then I heard a cracking sound. Before I knew it I turned back to see one of the buring pines pinned my legs. The flames burned away my fur as I twisted to pull free. I came loose and ran leaping until I crashed into the water of river." I paused and held my breath for a moment. "I take those pills for that injury; when the trunk fell it smashed my hips. Even now I can't go a single day with the pain being there." Shadow nodded, maybe he was relating it to his shoulder. I wasn't sure "The pain was so horrible I collapsed on the bank and blacked out. When I came to, half of my body was blacken with the burns; the water was even faded crimson. I dragged myself up and howled with the last of my strength waiting for a reply. But...it never came. Everyone I had ever loved was dead." I spoke hopelessly. "Shadow, I'm the only one left; my entire species was wiped out. I know what it's like to lose everything and to be torn apart until you don't want to go on anymore."

I smiled at him through the tears. "You're lucky to have Ice, Shadow; you're really lucky to have someone...." I let my voice drop off.
