In vain

~Echo~

I was just barely down the hall when the sudden alarming sound of footsteps heard behind me. I turned over my shoulder and saw men crowding the hallway. “Quick don’t let her get away!” One of them yelled. I sprinted down the hall as the sound of doors being busted open. I got to the end and darted my eyes around searching for an exit.

I shook the door handle; it refused to budge. “There’s nowhere to run, Newfoundland.” One said with a sneer as they crowded around me. I let go of the handle and in an instant came at them screaming. With a light leap I slammed my boot into his face the sound of his jaw being smashed to bits as he fell to the ground.

At the fall of their comrade, they all rushed at once; I recoiled and jumped into my wolf form pouncing into one. As my wild instinct taught me, I shoved my teeth into his throat and clenched my jaw tightly tearing apart the soft flesh; the warm blood gushed into my mouth leaving its metallic taste as I jumped back.

I took my stance for a second attack letting my hair bristle up and a deep snarl slip between my teeth. “Who are these men and why are they after us?!” I wondered in my human thinking.

I growled ferociously as they came closer showing my fangs still dripping with blood. They help up their guns; I knew what would happen if I didn’t react. I zigzagged across the floor narrowly missing the darts as they whirled by jumping at them I grabbed the gun of the closest man in my teeth; shaking it from his grip. I lunged for his throat but before I could make it to the soft tissue. Another slammed the blunt end of his gun into my head. Blood trickled into my eye as I snarled at him; I was ready to pounce but he had anticipated it sending the blow of his boot into my side.

I yelped out in pain as I hit the wall. I struggled to quickly get back up on my paws; but he was quickly upon me kicking me until I was down against the wall. Each blow sent an agonizing pain through my body; my mangled hips no longer allowed me to move. I returned to my human form lying in agony. He stopped and knelt down a wicked smile spreading across his face. “What a beautiful specimen you are.” He brushed his hand across my face making me cringe against it. “Ah, don’t be frightened; you’re going to come with us. Master Giovana will be pleased to have another prize.” He grabbed me around the waist lifting me off the ground. “Alright, we got this one; now go make sure those idiots got the rest of the dogs.”

I struggled in vain as they shoved me through the lobby. Angry tears burned my face as I thought helplessly. I knew they were going after the rest of the wolves; I only hoped they were able to fight them off. I suddenly thought of Shadow; looking back at him as I left. His black hair disheaveled as he tried to convince me to let him go with. I suddenly wished that I had stayed. I hoped desperately nothing happened to him. As they dragged me out the door; I bid Shadow a painful goodbye with regrets. I doubted I would ever see him again.
