In good company

~Echo~

The doors opened and I heard a soft yelp as they tossed another unfortunate halfer in.

Now in my wolf form my fur keeping me warm against the cold chill of the cage. I struggled to turn over; I swallowed a painful whine as I rolled over my body.

"Echo!" my ears perked at a familiar frenzied bark, "What are you doing here?"

I realized it was Kallik; she struggled against the ropes that bound her to face me better. I let out a long sigh. “I don’t know but we’re in trouble.” I flattened my ears hopelessly.

Her ears only perked til the black points resembled those of a cat. “Why do you say that? Ice, Shadow, and Nanuke are going to rescue us. We’re a pack they wouldn’t just abandon us.” She said beaming confidence in what she said.

I mulled over this in silence; she was right. No matter what packs were packs; they didn’t abandon each other. Without anyone I had forgotten how to put faith in my comrades. I was foolish to doubt the other wolves and the halfers as well. Even though I hoped they had not gotten hurt or as I refused to think worst.

I thought of Shadow as I left him. His golden eyes were doubtful seemingly bothered by the fact that I wanted to venture off alone. Had Shadow been able to fight them off? My feelings were mixed more doubt trampled over my hope. My blood boiled at the thought of them harming him while I sat here unable to do anything trapped like a rat.

I lunged at the bars; sinking my teeth onto the cold steel. I chewed on them angrily; anxiety eating me alive. Releasing my hated barrier I threw my weight at it. I yelped as the pain shot back through. Sitting back down I panted as blood trickled off my tongue; the cage so small that my head stuck flat against the iron bars.

Kallik only watch since she was unable to move but then turned her head confusingly as much as she could. “Echo, weren’t you wearing a collar earlier?” She barked.

I crooked my head suddenly aware of the absence of it around my neck. “It must have torn off when I was struggling.” I thought back before they threw me into this cell. “It’s probably in the snow.”

She wagged her tail almost in relief. “That’s great, I just hope they find it; along with tracks that’ll give them a stronger scent to follow.” Had she not been tied up she probably would have been prancing.

“I guess you’re right; since escaping on our own is currently impossible.” I muttered a little hopeful yet dreadful. I could hear the yells and protest of the other halfers who were being taken. The air smelled strongly of blood.

I threw my head back sticking my muzzle through the top of the bars and let out a mournful howl letting it carry through the air not caring whether I was heard or not.
