I sat in the plain white dress as the maids pulled at my hair; they pinned back my bangs leaving only my short sides and twisted loose curls into the ends. I tugged at the skirt; it went over my knees but wasn’t enough to cover my ugly scars. Just the sight of them left a sour taste in my mouth.
I looked up slowly into the mirror. My hair was beautiful but I was far from anything pretty; without the curtaining effect of my bangs; the dry blood and bruises shown clearly on my face. I could only think of what Shadow would say if he saw me like this…
I looked over my shoulder to Kallik; she had a scowl on her face as they pinned up her hair. If not for our current predicament; I probably would have been laughing at her.
The heavy chain was dropped on my neck once again and the guard drug us of; we were brought into a lavish dining hall. I sat down just as Jake and Jethro came in.
Jethro was almost walking on air while Jake gave a slight glance to the servant, Sebastien; well at least that’s what it seemed like he was.
The doors across the room flew open; we all jumped as they slammed against the wall.
“Welcome to my home!” Giovana almost sang; a red dress danced around her knees as she pranced in. I looked down trying to focus on my food more than her.
We all sat down to dinner; though I had been much hungrier earlier my appetite had diminished into nothing. I hated this place it was like before…I turned my wrist; the numbers inked into my skin screamed at me.

Though this time I was not a research experiment but nothing more than a pet to her; like a toy to grow bored of. I stabbed the fork into the food half-pretending that it was her head; it infuriated me but I wasn’t sure what could be done.
“You’ll all like it here much better; after all my guards have probably killed all your friends” She said in a sing-song voice. “So you might as well stay with me.” She gave a dark sneer to Belk.
I bit my lip my fork trembling against the plate; the anger taking control.
“WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU CAN JUST TREAT US LIKE THIS?!” I jumped up slamming both my hands on the table; my chair toppled over behind me. The room grew silent.
Giovana laughed. “Geez you sure have a temper; I’ll have to teach you some manners!” She brushed her finger over the button.
“JUST SHUT UP!!!” I screamed sliding my hand under the plate. The world seemed to stop spinning as it flew through the air. Giovana looked in horror as it spattered like over her dress; the fine china smashing against the wall.
Everyone stayed dead still; I held the table panting. I was surely going to get it now but I couldn’t take this anymore; I was going crazy.
Giovana’s face turned red with rage she slammed the button on her remote. My whole body raged with pain as the electric pulse surged through me. I stumbled backward tripping on the overturned chair. I raked and grabbed at my neck; it was more intense that anything I had ever felt. The scent of burning hair flared my nostrils as I struggled like a fish out of water.
“GET HER OUT NOW; TEACH HER MANNERS FOR HER MASTER!!” Giovana screamed in a child-like tone slamming the remote onto the table. It finally stopped I went limp on the floor. My vision was blurred.
“Echo!” I heard Kallik yell as the sound of the chair scooting against the floor was all I was vaguely conscious of.
“Get back!” A guard snapped at her forcing her to stay away. He shoved my arms hastily behind my back dragging me to my feet snapping the heavy chain onto my neck. I glanced over my shoulder at them but was quickly adverted by the guard as he shoved me down a dark hall.
“Man, you are one stupid dog; don’t worry though I’ll take care of that.~” I couldn’t see him the I could almost feel his sneer through my skin it almost made me shiver. I’m not sure how much longer I could stand this; if not kill your spirit entirely you must surely go insane in a place like this. Giovana was nothing more than a selfish spoiled brat; she didn’t care the hurt she caused us.
It was times like this that humans infuriated me; they did evil to each other starting great wars and struggling for territory. We were left to be caught in the cross fire.
I was shaken out of my thoughts as we stopped at a heavy metal door. Without a word, he shoved a key in the lock and pulled the handle; it slowly glided open revealing a large fridge of some sorts. Like the kind you’d find in the back of a butcher shop. My feeling of dread rose to my throat. He unlinked the chain and shoved me into the room.
I tripped stumbling onto the floor. The frigid concrete cause goosebumps to form on my skin; it was utterly silent except the ominous jingling of the chains above. I struggled to get up my muscles were numb and my nerves felt dead. I pushed myself to my feet as he pulled the door shut the lock clicking in place.
At that moment my fight or flight instinct kicked in and I sprinted off; I was too weak to fight so I ran hoping to find something to hurt him with. My breath escaped me in pulses of vapor; it was so cold my mind was running blank.
A flash caught my eye before I could process it he lept from between the chains. I lept forward but my body went dead as horrible pain surged against my skull. I collapsed into the cement my vision fuzzy as I struggled for breath. I looked up much as I could to see him standing there a silently tapping a pipe against his palm.
“You never give up do you…”
I must have looked like a terrified deer as I felt warm blood seep into my eyes. It was getting harder to keep them open; my whole vision was slowly going into the blackness. Am I going to die? I wondered until I closed my eyes and collapsed into the floor.

I sighed. What a mess this has become; I knew Giovana had been wasting her time with this lot. The maids cleaned the mess as we continued dinner. She seemed to cool down sure that Miss Echo was getting whatever she had coming to her. I had given her a choice but she choose wrong; there was not a thing I could do about it. I took my leave after I had my fill.
“If you’ll all excuse me I have other work to be done.” I bowed and walked silently from the room. As soon as I had ventured beyond the doorway I took to the air.
I landed softly in my room and fluttered up to my cage clasping my tired feet to the perch. How exhausting it was; I settled into a soft sleep it was the first I had slept so contently.
I dreamed of flying the skies of the world not a single chain nor wall binding me to the ground. Looking down on man from high points laughing at their struggles instead of being the center of their tortures.
I wish I could be like Alice and escape to a Wonderland rather than be trapped like a dog to the “Red Queen”; it was an absurd idea. I would never escape this wretched fate.
I awoke to complete darkness; I looked about. How long had I slept? I flew from my cage and dropped onto my feet. I pulled the pocketwatch from my vest and clicked it open. It was nearly midnight; I knew it was too good to slept until the morning dawn but I had other business to take care of. I smirked and made light steps from the dreary chamber.
For what almost felt like the seventh time today I made my way to the door of the prisoners. The guard was fast asleep by his post; if I didn’t desire utter silence I would surely topple that leaned chair of his.
Without a single disturbance I opened the door, I was greeted with no rude comments nor questions. Maybe they had all fallen asleep or they merely didn’t want to cause the guard to awaken.
Either way, worked into my favor; I made my way to Clementine or should I say Jacob’s cage. I could see his face through the blackness; he must not have slept at all. I reached into the breast pocket of my vest and pulled out a key. I twirled it on my finger with a slight wink before placing it into the lock. It clicked loudly much to my distaste and with a firm grasp of the bars pulled them open.
“Thanks.” He stood up stretching and stepped out.
“Yes, I’m surely putting my neck on the line; if caught Giovana will surely cook me into a crow’s pie.” I chuckled. “Now if I may.”
I snatched the bowler’s hat from his head it was much less prominent that mine; they would surely notice the difference.
“May I suggest a trade?” Though I was not pleased to give up my hat I took it off and held it to him. He nodded and placed it onto his head pulling the brim to shadow his eyes.
“Perfect, it’s as if I have a twin.” I laughed dropping the cap over my disheveled hair. I placed the key in his hand and stepped into the cell pulling the bars shut behind me.
“Now I shall leave the rest to you.~” I said waving lightly through the bars as he walked cautiously from the room. What a fun game this was going to be!
