"What's in the locket? It's so pretty! I love the red ribbon," Alissa commented looking at the locket around my neck.
"Oh," I said placing a hand on the locket, fingering the engraving with my index finger. "Just a picture of my family."
"Where are they now? Maybe we could visit them one day..." she trailed off, thinking out loud.
"They're dead," I answered. I looked down. I missed them a lot. But, the people here at Harmony, the group I had traveled with were my new family.
"Mine too," she nodded, "they died a while ago, so I went to live with Abby, she's a golden eagle." She got up and came to sit beside me and pulled me in for a hug. "I didn't mean to bring anything bad up..it's just my way of learning about people," she tried to explain. I could see that she felt so bad.
"It's ok," I answered honestly, returning the hug. I had long ago accepted my family's fate. It had happened years ago. I was grown up now. It was no longer something that haunted me as it used to. It still hurt thinking about them, sure, but I was a different person now. I have moved on.
"So..." she said after a pause, "what do you want to do now? I mean..I can leave you alone if you want, or we could do something fun, just you and me."
"You definitely don't have to leave, unless of course, you have something else you'd rather be doing," I answered with a smile.
She shook her head. "Nope, my schedule is wide open!" She returned the smile. "Any ideas on what we should do then?"
I thought for a moment. "Want to just walk around? Maybe we'll find something that will inspire us," I suggested, coming up short on what we could be doing.
She nodded her head, "Sure, sounds good to me."
"Awesome!" I exclaimed, and we got up and began the walk.
