“So where to next?” I asked Calamari as I slipped on my jacket, the air actually being cold for once. We were still outside the woods, keeping a good distance but a close enough one to where I could hunt at night for a good fair rabbits, even a deer a few nights ago. That was good venison… I licked my lips just thinking about it. Damn. I need to stop doing that.
That’s when a revolting smell came into the mist. A lion and… a group of halfers? They smelled disgusting too… along with their blood… Wait. Blood?
“Is that-” Kai hurried over to the smell and Ennis quickly followed along. Benign just looked at me curiously. I shrugged but we needed to follow them. “Come on, Benign,” I told her and we both ran after them, finding the group of halfers and they were fighting an insane lion. Some of them were hurt, I could see that obviously because most of them seemed out of shape, with a couple of them protecting their children. They brought their children? What, were they idiots?
“Kai?!” I looked up to one of the couples that had a child being protected by its father and saw that it was the girl that spoke up. How the hell did she know Kai? I’ll talk to Calamari later…
It was obvious they needed help, so we did our best to pitch in on the fight and eventually, the lion scampered away and I just barely was able to breathe before all of the halfers started to question us.
“Who are you?”
“Kai, it’s so good to see you again!!”
“Why do you smell weird?” Obviously towards me.
“What’s with that halfer and why did it try to kill us?”
“What’s going on with the world now?”
“Okay, everybody give them some space!” A girl called out, looking about 18, walked up to us and eventually, everybody quieted down and they were looking at us for answers. I looked over at Kai and he had wide eyes and was looking at Benign. She knew the truth yes, but she didn’t need to listen to it again.
“Benign, why don’t you and your father go and find some water and some herbs? Like the ones I’ve been showing you,” I whispered to Benign and she just nodded and German went with her. I looked at Kai once they were a far distance away and he just sighed. He didn’t want to explain. What, and I was better? I didn’t trust these people. I may have more experience out there with the guards, but right now, this group of halfers was going to gain attention from the town down a few miles.
“Right now, you group of halfers are a gigantic target,” I put bluntly and they all started whispering.
“What do you mean?” One of them shot out and I looked at the group.
“No matter where you came from, either from mansions or from the prisons or even ‘Harmony’-” I put up air quotes because honestly, I didn’t believe in the crap of a place. “-you’re a big target for the guards down at town and it’s not that hard to spot a gigantic group of Halfers like you down a few miles. I’m surprised none of you have collars either,” I said and they started talking louder, asking why they would ever need collars. I shifted a little since my shoulder was giving me pain.
“We did come from Harmony,” the 18 year old spoke up as she stepped forward and looked at me. She smelled like a cat. “We just left a little bit ago.” I glanced at Kai and he was looking at me and nodded. So it was true? You have got to be kidding me.
“How many years have gone by in Harmony?” I asked and she looked at me.
“Three years.” That’s impossible. Harmony was hard to find even now, harder, since more guards are getting more of its whereabouts and location on where it is.
“That’s impossible,” Kai spoke up with a strong voice, one I hadn’t heard in a while. “You’ve been gone for ten years.” I guess Kai did the math and a lot of them started going frantic, wondering about how old they were and where their families were along with friends.
“That’s a lie,” the girl spat at Kai and I stared at her.
“No, it is not,” I growled and she backed up. My fangs were bared and I wasn’t in the mood if this girl was honestly going to try to stand up to me. “This world is nothing like it is now. Halfers are known as enemies, trash, pets, and wild animals because of the revolt that happened ten years. It’s not safe to have your tails or ears out now. Nothing is safe,” I spat back at her and she jumped. A lot of them were scared now. Not exactly what I wanted but I didn’t care.
“We need to leave this area now or all of us are going to be get tracked down,” Kai said quickly and I just nodded and motioned for the group to follow me and they all did, surprisingly. I didn’t like this. This was too obvious and keeping a small group was what I liked. I only wanted to be with Calamari, German, and Benign. I hated having a gigantic group like this. I felt too exposed like this, especially since I was wanted in a lot of towns for crimes.
“Uncomfortable?” Calamari had caught up with me and was looking at me.
“You have no idea.”

After seeing Rika run off made me nervous, though I got even more nervous when she tackled a random stranger. Once I found out who he was and what was going on, I calmed down. Nathan was hiding behind my leg, still scared from the lion I think, and of the newcomer. Once Rika offered to have him join the group, he seemed uneasy and he didn’t answer. He said he would think about it and to leave him alone to think so we did and went back to the group and listened to what this halfer had to say. I had to admit though, her smell really threw me off. It smelled like wolf and lynx.
“Do you smell lynx and wolf coming off of her?” Rika whispered to me as she calmed Nathan down.
“Yeah, I do. It’s odd,” I told her and she just nodded.
After listening to this girl a bit more, it started to make me mad. Was everything honestly like this now? Was what she said was true? Everything seemed true in her face. I was just actually starting to worry about Nathan and Rika. I think Rika was the same way too, though she was more worried about Nathan.
