In a deep forest, there is a wolf pack known as the Inotas. The Inotas live in a cave and are a strong pack. Their pack leaders were Roku and Luki. Roku, a gray wolf who is a strong leader and cares very much about his pack. Luki, a light brown and white wolf lead the pack by Roku's side. Luki is strong-headed and she has a soft side to her too. Together, Roku and Luki lead the Inotas.
It was mid-winter when Roku and Luki were expecting a litter of pups. The whole pack was excited about the arrival of new pups. Then, one night, Roku and the pack went on a hunt. Luki's daughter, Mali, a brown wolf stayed with Luki at the cave while the pack went on the hunt. Later, Luki went into labor and Mali had to let Roku know somehow. Mali went outside the cave and howled as loud as she could to let Roku know that Luki was giving birth. She listened for a response , but she didn't hear any.
Then she heard Luki call for her and she hurried back into the cave. Luki was deep into the cave at the very back. When Mali got there, a pup was born. A little gray and white pup that was crying for its mom. Mali helped Luki clean the pup up. Then outside the cave, Mali and Luki heard a howl that was very close. It sounded like Roku's howl. Mali went outside to check it out and it was Roku. He had heard Mali's howl and hurried back as fast as he could with the pack. Roku and Mali hurried back into the cave and Roku growled at the other's to make sure that they wouldn't follow.
When Roku and Mali made it back into the cave, Luki had given birth to another pup. This pup was as black as the night. Roku greeted Luki and helped Mali clean the pup up. Many long hours past and not another pup was born yet. Then, a pup was born by the color of yellow and white. Mali cleaned up the pup up and the three pups nursed on their mother's milk. Mali left the cave to tell the pack about the birth.
Roku was proud of his mate and howled. As he howled, so did the pack outside. Luki, even though she was very tired, she gave a long howl. Roku and Luki knew that the new pups would need names. The gray and white pup was called Luna, the black pup was called Kilo, and the yellow with white pup was called Angrel.
Roku and Luki were very happy, as was the whole pack. Roku went outside to tell the pack that they could come in. The whole pack began to run toward the cave, but then Roku growled at them, he let them know that they can't go near Luki for a while. Then the pack walked into the cave and laid down. Roku went back with Luki and laid down beside her with the pups. That night was a happy and joyous night for them all.
Chapter 2
Follow the Leader
A few months had past since the birth of Luna, Kilo, and Angro. It was spring now and the pups were old enough to walk out of the cave. Mali taught them the pack rules. The leaders were their parents and the rest of the pack had to follow them. Mali told them that the strongest wolf would be the leader and the wolf would choose another wolf to rule by his side. Angro and Kilo wanted to be leaders right after Mali told them that. Soon afterwards, the pups were playing. They began to play a game that they like to call follow the leader.
Angro asked," How do we play follow the leader?"
Kilo answered," What's the name of the game dufus? It's called "follow the leader", so we pick a leader then we follow that leader and I suggest that it be me."
" No, I would make a better leader Kilo, you couldn't even lead a fish to a stream."
" Well, neither could you Angrel."
The brothers continued to argue when Luna just sat there and shook her head.
Luna shouted," Stop!"
The brothers stopped and looked at Luna.
Luna then said," Instead of you two fighting over who's going to be the leader, I will just be the leader."
Both Angrel and Kilo rolled on the ground and laughed their heads off. Luna gave a disgust look on her face.
" What's so funny?"
Kilo regained himself enough to say," Luna, you can't be a leader, you're a girl."
" What's that got to do with anything?"
Angrel said," Well, girls can't be leaders."
Then Luna said," We'll just see about that. I bet I can be a better leader than any of you two."
Both Angrel and Kilo looked at each other. Then Kilo smiled and turned to Luna.
Kilo said," Alright, let's see if you can be a leader."
Luna nodded and went into the forest. Angrel and Kilo followed her. Luna led them around trees and rocks. They went through bushes and a little pond. Then they came to a river and over this river was a log. Luna stopped at the log. She looked at the log and then looked at her brothers. She began to walk across the log even though she knew that she wasn't aloud to. Both Angrel and Kilo knew that too.
Angrel shouted," Luna, were not supposed to cross the river!"
Luna replied," I know, but have you ever wondered why we can't cross?"
The brothers nodded their heads at Luna.
" Then that is why were going to find out, come on. Remember, I'm still the leader."
The brothers followed Luna across the river. Angrel and Kilo knew that this was a bad idea. Since Luna was the leader and they didn't want to quit the game, so they followed.
Chapter 3
The White Wolf
When they made it across, the land didn't look any different than their side of the river. They wondered why they weren't aloud to cross the river. Everything looks fine and safe.
Luna said," I'm going to go look around, this place looks cool."
Kilo said," When you mean by cool, you mean the same as our side of the river."
Luna gave a disgusted look at Kilo and then continued to look around.The brothers followed their sister through the forest. They have not been walking for long when they came across a dead deer. It looked like it has not been touched by anything. Luna, Angro, and Kilo were hungry and Luna went to the deer. She began to eat on it's back and when she began to eat, the brothers joined her. Angro went to the other side of the deer and when he did, he ran into another wolf pup. Both of them scared each other. Angro fell on his back and looked at the pup. Luna and Kilo heard the noise and went on the other side of the deer. They found that Angro was laying on his back and looking at a white wolf pup. The three of them starred at the wolf pup.
Angrel said," Hi, who are you?"
The white pup said," Hi, I'm Sandrea."
Luna and Kilo helped Angro off the ground.
Luna said," Well hello, my name is Luna and these are my brothers, Kilo and Angrel."
" Pleased to meet you guys, I didn't mean to scare you guys."
Kilo said," It's no big deal."
" Well, what were you guys doing out here?" asked Sandrea
Angrel said," We were playing a game and......"
" Games, I love to play games," said Sandrea enthusiastically.
Luna asked," Do you want to play a game?"
" Yes, what game were you playing before you met me?"
Angrel said," We were playing follow the leader, but we can just play what you want."
" Ok, have you guys just wrestled around?"
Kilo said," Of course, so you want to wrestle, watch out Sandrea cause here I come."
Kilo charged after Sandrea and Sandrea took off running with Kilo chasing her. When Kilo finally caught up with her, he tackled her to the ground. The two of them began to bite each other's ears and roll around on the ground. Luna and Angro starred at them, then Angrel gave Luna a playful look.
Angrel said," Well Luna, it looks like it's just you and me."
Angrel charged at Luna and they ran through the forest.
The wolf pups forgot all about the deer and played for a while. It was almost evening when they were tired of playing. They layed down on the soft grass to rest from all of their playing.
Kilo said," That is the most I have played in my entire life, I'm dead tired."
Sandrea said," That goes for all of us."
Then they heard a howl in the direction of the Inota pack. Luna, Angrel, and Kilo knew that it was their father's howl. The three pups knew it was time to go home.
Angrel said," Well, it is time for us to go home. Ummm, Sandrea, where is your pack?"
" My pack are the Zoulers, we live in a big burrow inside a big hill a good far away from here. Who's your pack Angrel?"
" Our pack are the Inotas, we live in a cave a good ways away from here."
The pups heard the howl again and knew that they needed to go home now.
Angrel said," Well, I guess this is good bye."
Luna said," No it's not, how about we meet here tomorrow afternoon, what do you guys think?"
Kilo said," Sis, I think that you are a genious and that I am happy to have you as my sister."
Angrel said," Yeah, then it isn't good bye forever, but good bye untill tomorrow."
Sandrea said," Alright, then I will see you guys tomorrow."
They said their good bye's and the three pups ran across the log and hurried back to the cave. Sandrea ran back to the direction of her pack.
Angrel said," Wait untill mom and dad know that we made a new friend."
Luna stopped in front of Angrel and she had a mean look on her face.
Luna said," Don't tell mom and dad about Sandrea, I don't think that they would like it."
Kilo asked," Why wouldn't they?"
" I just don't think that they would like it, one reason is because we went across the log that we weren't supposed to cross."
Both Angro and Kilo nodded their heads in agreement.
" So it is settled, we keep this a secret?"
The brothers nodded their heads and Luna nodded hers. They heard their father's howl again and then they ran back to the cave as fast as they could.
Chapter 4
The Hunt
The next morning, the pups were still asleep by their mother's side. Then they were woken by their father.
Roku said," Rise and shine my children, today is a special day for you."
Kilo rolled back over to try to go back to sleep after have been rudely woken up. Luna and Angrel did the same thing as Kilo. They weren't ready to get up at the crack of dawn.
" Roku, couldn't you do this when they are older or at least later in the day." said Luki slowly raising her head.
" Nonsense, my father started teaching me how to hunt when I was their age."
" But you are not your father Roku."
" I know, but they need to know this stuff at some point in their life, so why not now."
" Ok then, kids get up, your going hunting."
Luki got up and the three pups laid there trying to ignore their parents.
Luna said," Come on mom, can this be another day."
Kilo said," Yeah."
Luki said," Your father wants to take you hunting today, so, get up and I will leave you alone."
After hearing what their mother said, the three of them slowly began to get up. Roku and Luki went outside. Angrel sat down and gave a big yawn. The three of them began to walk out of the cave. Then Angrel stopped in his tracks.
Angrel said," Wait, if we are going hunting, then that means that we can't go and see Sandrea."
Both Luna and Kilo stopped after hearing what Angrel said.
" What are we going to do about that?"
The three pups sat down and looked at each other.
" It sounds like to me that we can't see her today."
Kilo said," We can always leave dad and do what we want."
Both Luna and Angrel gave Kilo a look of disgust.
" Hey, I was just sayin'."
Luna said," We're going hunting right, then if we catch something sooner, the sooner that we can go and see Sandrea."
Angrel said," Good thinking."
Kilo said," Yeah, good going sis, how hard can it be to catch a deer or something."
" Your right Kilo, the pack always brings food back."
" Of course I am right, I am always right, unlike a doofus like you."
" What do you mean......."
The pups heard their father howl for them to hurry and get outside. When they heard that, they hurried outside to their father and the pack. They met with their father and the pack outside.
Roku motioned the three pups to sit down in frone of him. As they went to sit down, their father began to talk.
" Luna, Kilo, and Angrel, my children, one day you will have to know how to take care of yourselves. When I was your age, my father began to teach me."
All three pups were listening, but were also falling asleep at the same time. Kilo tought that he could catch anything and didn't need advice. Luna and Angrel were listening and were interested, but it was too early for them to listen. Roku continued with his speech.
" Now I will teach you the same as my father teached me."
Roku noticed that the pups were falling asleep and gave a really loud growl and bark. The pups jumped out of their skin when they heard that.
" As I was saying, one thing that you need to know is that the pack hunts together. You need to learn to hunt as a pack, to hunt as one. You need to know where everyone is and what everyone is doing. As we walk, you will learn more on your own that just by my own words. Now my children, lets move! "
Roku let out a loud howl and then the whole pack howled. When they did, Luna and Angrel howled along with them. Kilo was still dazed and Roku pushed him out of it. Roku looked at Kilo and Kilo looked back.
" Son, pay attention, this is stuff that will one day, just maybe, make you a pack leader one day." said Roku.
When Kilo heard that he woke up right away. The thought of one day being a leader made him wake with enthusiasm about learning how to hunt.
" Really dad, you think so? " Kilo said.
" Sure, but first, you need to learn how to hunt." Roku replied.
After that, Roku, the pups, and the pack went into the forest. The pups not knowing what to expect, followed with anticipation. They walked a good ways into the forest when they came across a elk herd in a field. They were a good distance away from the herd. When the pups saw these huge creatures, they were surprised that the pack could take down such beasts.
Roku said," Now, this herd of elk is what we've been tracking for a while. The first thing we do is pick out the young, old, or weak ones."
Luna asked," Why do you only pick those father? "
" Because, they are the easiest to kill Luna. The strong ones can hurt or even kill us. I'm sorry if this scares you, but it is true."
Luna looked at the elk with a sign of fear in her eyes. All of the pups looked at the herd that way.
" Now you are going to watch us as we hunt, ok. " Roku said.
Kilo remarked," Hey! What about us dad? "
" You three are old enough to start learning, not old enough to go into the field. Trust me kids, you'll learn something from this experience, ok." Roku said in a calm voice.
" I'm going to leave Mali with you guys, she will stay for you own protection and to help you understand what it is we do."
Mali came out of the pack and stood beside the pups. When she did that Roku and the pack took off. The pups and Mali watched as the pack spread out around the heard. All of them stayed hidden as best as the could. One of the pack members got a little closer that the others, but was still well hidden.
Angrel asked," Sooo... why is one of the members closer? "
Mali answered, " So that the member can pick out a target. When the member moves forward toward the target at a fast speed, that is our target. "
The pups continued to watch closley. The member scanned the herd, untill the member seen a elk calf. It waited untill it was in a good area to move. When the calf ventured out a little to far away from the herd, the member made its move. The whole pack moved and when the elk saw the wolf, the went into a stampede. The calf was on the outside of the herd with its mother. When the pack moved, Mali and the pups had to move too. Mali took the lead with the pups behind her.
The calf began to get tired and eventually the calf and its mother were separated from the herd. Now was the time to strike, the pack moved in for the kill. The pack was nipping at the legs of both the mother and the calf. The mother elk fought the pack with the powerful kick of her legs. The calf tried to stay close to its mother. The pack surrounded them when eventually, the mother was distracted enough to try to take a bite of the calf. Roku moved in for the neck of the calf, he jumped and sunk his teeth into the neck right below the jaw. The calf fell to the ground and when that happened, the mother elk saw that there was nothing else she could do. She ran back as fast as she could back to the herd. The pack went back to where Roku was with the calf. The pack began working on killing the calf, others grabbed the neck and when the calf closed its eyes, it was over.
Chapter 5
Victory
Luna, Angrel, and Kilo were stunned at their father's amazing hunting skills and how the pack can work together as one. Luna was absolutly facinated with the whole experience. Angrel was amazed at what it took to take down something that big. Kilo thought that he could take on anything at that point.
Roku looked at the calf to make sure that it was dead, when he realized that it was dead, he howled for the pups and Mali to come down. The went down to the field as fast as they could. The pups were ancious to see the kill. When they got down to the pack, they were excited about the packs success.
Roku said," When we work as a team, just about anything can be accompolished. Keep that in mind children. "
The pups nodded their heads.
" Now, what we do now, is we eat what we want and take the rest of the kill to the rest of the pack. This meat will be enough to last the pack for a long while, ok? "
Luna said, " Ok dad, but dad that was amazing, how do you guys know what you are doing and what moves to make? "
" Yeah, how are you sure that you won't mess up or someone won't get hurt or something? " asked Angrel.
" Well kids ......."
Kilo said, " Come on, our dad is the leader of the pack, he always knows what to do and knows what is going to happen everytime, right dad?"
" Not always Kilo, everything that I know today was taught to me and some of it I learned it on my own. The leader doesn't always have control of everything you know. But something that I can do is do my best to make sure that nothing happens to me or anyone else. " said Roku
The pups nodded and went over to the kill where the rest of the pack was. Roku smiled and joined them also. After a while of eating and the pack getting their share, each member including the pups grabbed a little bit of meat and headed back to the cave.
When they got back to the cave, the rest of the pack was happy to see that there was food brought home. Luki came out of the cave and the three pups ran up to her with meat in their mouths and dropped it in front of their mother.
