The world is filled with multiple amazing creatures called pokemon. Pokemon are normally found within the wild but are captured by certain capsule devices called pokeballs. Trainers often catch pokemon to train and battle. Some capture them to be used within contests. And others just keep them as pets. There is no right or wrong when owning a pokemon... there are just bad trainers

The Kanto Region has been where trainers normally make their start
The Johto Region has been known to the second generation start
The Hoenn Region is the third generation start
Then there is the Sinnoh Region, the fourth generation start

All different pokemon are located within all the regions, some are mixed in within the other regions, while others are just found within their region home and nowhere else.

This is especially true within the starter pokemon unless you're lucky enough to catch a break on finding one.

Kanto's starters are: Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle
Johto's starters are: Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile
Hoenn's starters are: Treeko, Torchic, and Mudkip
Sinnoh's starters are: Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup
