STRANGER DANGER

~Khan

How I got myself into this moment in time, to this unthinkable situation, was beyond me. However, how unbelievably impossible this scene seemed, it didn't change the fact that it was real. That this wasn't some bizarre dream, but it was in fact reality.
Oh how I wished it was just the opposite.

Thinking about it, this is probably my own fault anyway. This situation had come about because of me, because I had died one way or another. I wish I remembered how though. But, no matter how much I hated it, I couldn’t shy away from this god-forsaken game. Even though that was what I wanted. If I backed off now, yes, I wouldn't have to undergo this tournament full of bloodshed and leave with a good, clean conscience, but it would be held over my head for a long time to come when I’m in the “place of sorrow and vengeance”. The bad place.

After I was brought into this game of tag, I ended up huddling myself behind a tree, keeping my distance away from the explosions. Sounds of gunfire were in the distance. I could already imagine the lines of worry on my face in my mind. I remembered the leader telling me about some of my teammates as briefly as possible, because I missed the introductions. One of them he mentioned was “The gun guy.” I felt it was free to assume that he was the one that was shooting.

Suddenly, there was a moment of silence…until sounds of laughter cut through it like a knife. Assuming that it caught the attention of anyone nearby, I took advantage of the moment to take off up to higher ground. In the process, I tripped and banged my knee, then clawed my way up the hill. I brushed against a tree as I rounded the corner. A sigh of relief exhaled from my lips that I didn’t head-butt against it. After carrying on, I discovered that I can tell how close I am to a tree by feeling the large roots beneath my shoes and the muck of mud I stepped in must have meant I was near a body of water.

Not bad for a blind kid, eh? My hand automatically went to my empty eye sockets that resembled large black pits. I had a big disadvantage. I needed to adapt and I was angry. Not angry from my blindness, but at myself.

How am I so calm about all this? Maybe I'm going insane?

Another explosion went off.

Like all the others that are competing?

I shook my head. Auntie said that our personality now was of are true selves when we were all still alive. I crossed my fingers that when I was alive my true self was a kick-ass mofo. In my case, I needed that badassery to stay alive in this game. Without that, I was just a kid. A blind kid without any weapons.
Yeah, that just screams terror doesn’t it?

Maybe Auntie gave us little clues on how to survive without intentionally telling us. Though, it was highly unlikely. I pondered on this for a minute or two. Auntie was the last thing I saw before my vision was taken. Her image burned itself into the very core of my brain. Those sad eyes she had……I guess she wasn’t that fond of the game either.

Suddenly a scent swept over the area. It smelled of iron, blood, perhaps? The laughing in the background continued along even louder before. What was going on? Was the two laughing it up my teammates….or were they my enemies?
There was only one way to find out.

I moved on. Telling by all the sounds they were making, they were faced in a different direction. I decided that it meant that I was behind them. But as I moved forward, I felt a sharp pain in my arm. Wires sliced into the skin near my shoulder leaving a deep gash splitting open.

I was about to cry out until I lost balance and tried to regain my footing. Only to feel nothing was there but air. In another second, I had fallen backwards into a large crevice, but barely caught the ledge and held on with all my might. Sadly, I was slowly losing grip as the gash from my arm stung. I tried to use my other hand to hold on, but I grabbed a loose edge and slipped, starting to fall. "Ahhhhh-!" But I stopped just as suddenly; someone had grabbed my hand and pulled me up.

As my feet got back onto the sturdy ground, I exhaled deeply letting all the adrenaline and panic rush out. Why was I saved? I mean with me gone, there would be one less person to compete with. Unsure of where that person was standing, I angled my face to the direction of the ground.

“Thanks a lot, stranger.”
