Chapter Nine: Standing Up for What's Right

-Jason-

I didn’t like seeing that Elijah was getting picked on. She was my only friend here. No one else wanted to get close to me. I was fine with me getting pushed around but I didn’t want to see it happen to her. Scientists have pushed me around for fourteen years of my life I wasn’t about to see that happen to her.

It seemed that first period went a bit too fast for me. I felt like I couldn’t understand anything that we learned today. I’ll have to ask Elijah for help on the homework if I don’t understand what I’m doing. Elijah and I agreed that we would meet up at her locker before fourth period. I wandered to my next class; which was math. It was a nice class, all we did was take notes and the teacher was nice. With taking notes and starting homework in class, it felt like today was going really fast.

Now it was time for the period that I was regretting, gym…I didn’t know who was going to be in gym with me but I was really hoping that it wasn’t Conner. When I walked into the locker room I stopped at the gym teachers door to attempt to let him know that I was the new kid. After a few minuets he gave me a lock and told me to go and pick a locker to put my stuff in then come back and tell him the number. I picked a locker where there were empty lockers on both sides and then hooked the lock into the little hole and got changed into a pair of shorts.

I went back to the teacher and told him the number of the locker. To my displeasure I heard Conner’s voice obnoxiously echoing in the small room that came before the door the entrance into the locker room. I went back over to my locker and sat down on the bench and waited for the teacher to tell us that we could go out to the gym.

“Well if it isn’t the new kid.” I looked down at the ground and didn’t look up at Conner. “What’s the matter JJ you afraid?”

“I-It’s Jason.” I said.

“He does speak.” One of his friends stated.

“B-but h-he c-can’t talk w-without s-st-stuttering.” Conner commented making his friends laugh.

I just took a deep breath and didn’t say anything to them. They weren’t worth it. Whatever we were doing in gym I’m sure that I could learn quickly enough to beat Conner in. I was determined to do that. Soon enough the teacher took attendance and then we all went into the gym.

“Today we are starting our unit of good old fashion futbol, that’s soccer for everyone who doesn’t know what it is actually called.” The teacher started. “I’ll just quickly explain the rules of soccer so that we can get going.” He mentioned He explained the rules and I got the main part of the game. Not allowed to touch the ball with your hands except if you were in the net.

Being the new kid I wasn’t surprised that I was picked last. I was stuck in the net because no one else wanted to be in the net. I also wasn’t surprised that Conner didn’t pick me; it seemed to be all the buff weight lifting junkies were all on one team and then the rest of us were on the opposing team.

When we went back into the locker room I was getting pats on the back for being able to stop Conner’s shots. We even won, which was really surprising.

“It was just beginners luck. You won’t be so lucky next time.” Conner stated slamming his locker shut and stormed out of the locker room. I took everything out of my stuck it in my bag and left to meet Elijah at her locker.

I smiled at Elijah as she walked up to her locker. “What are you smiling about? She asked me a bit confused.

“I-I bet C-Conner in soccer.” I told her.

“Really!? Way to go, what position did you play?” She asked me.

“T-the one t-that stands i-in front of the net.” I said.

“You were the goal keeper, good job that’s the toughest position on the field.” She smiled at me.

I nodded, “I-I really like soccer. I-It’s fun.”

“I’m glad you like it.” She said and got her books for fourth period.

The end of the day came faster then I thought it would have but it was nice to be able to get out of such a crowded place. I gather what I needed to do for homework and then went over to Elijah’s locker; Conner was pushing her around again. I quickly walked over to them and push Conner away from Elijah making him stumble.

“Jason, stay out of this.” Elijah said.

“Yea JJ do what Eli tells you to do.” Conner snickered at me and went to push me back but I stepped out of the making him make a fool out of himself by stumbling over his own two feet.

“Leave Elijah alone.” I ordered clenching my hands into fists.

“And who’s going to stop me?” He asked straightening back up and he pushed my shoulder.

I didn’t answer back and I didn’t do anything to him for pushing my shoulder, I just looked him straight in the eye and didn’t back down.

“Who’s gonna stop me pipsqueak?” Conner asked pushing my other shoulder.

“I will.” I answered which made everyone who had gathered around us laugh.

“Jason, stop, you’re going to get yourself hurt.” Elijah said to me.

“How pathetic, you think that you’re all tough, but your not, you’re just a worthless piece of trash.” Conner smirked at me and pushed both of my shoulders harder then what he was and made me stumble back into the lockers.

“I-I am n-not trash.” I spoke up.

“Only trash would stand up against someone that they know they are going to lose against.” Conner spat back.

I smirked at him, “W-Wouldn’t that m-make you trash th-then? C-considering that y-you couldn’t get a sh-shot past me i-in gym today?” I commented and I could tell that really ticked him off he punched me in the gut and I started coughing but I grabbed his wrist and twisted his arm behind his back. “I-I don’t want to fight.” I said.

“To late for that one.” Conner said and grabbed me with his free hand and threw me up over his shoulder and down onto the ground and started kicking me.

I couldn’t breath and it felt like one of my ribs cracked from his steel toe boots. “THAT’S ENOUGH!” The principles voice boomed over the roar of the kids that were around us. He came to the center and saw me on the ground then glared at Conner, “To my office now.” He ordered Conner as Elijah helped me up off the floor.

“Elijah take him to the nurses office to get checked out.” The principal ordered and followed Conner to make sure he went to his office.

“I-I d-don’t want to go to the nurses o-office. L-let’s just go t-to therapy.” I told her.

“No, I’m taking you to the nurse.” Elijah objected grabbing our bags and took me to the nurses’ office.

Elijah explained to the nurse what happened as I was told to sit down on one of the beds. “Elijah, y-you can g-go to your therapy, I’ll catch u-up.” I smiled at her.

“You sure?” She asked me with concern in her voice.

I smiled and nodded at her, “I’ll be okay.”

“Alright, then.” She nodded and then grabbed her bag and leaving.

It didn’t take long for the nurse to check me over. She told me that I will be sore and I’ll have bruises later on but just in case I should go and see a doctor so that I could get my rib cage x-rayed to make sure that I didn’t have a fracture or a broken rib. I told her that I had a doctor’s appointment coming up in a day or two and she gave me a note to give to my parents so I could get the x-rays. I thanked her then left. I was already feeling sore and it hurt to breath but I promised Elijah that I would meet her at therapy so that’s what I did. When I got there I sat in the lobby and waited for her to come out.
