Chapter 4
My father's face was creased and he wearily looked down at the letters that the Sakimoto's had sent down. He had been sighing all day and whenever he looked at them he gave a sad shake of his head. What do they say?" My mother finally asked him. He sighed yet again. "The Sakimoto's have taken a liking to our Inn." He replies. "Then why all the huff and puff?" She says. "They like it so much that they want to buy it. Make a few other one's in the other villages." My father breaks the news.
"Sell the Inn!? Father we could never do that. I've lived here all my life!" I exclaim. "I know. And I'm not. But they're being persistent." He grumbles. My mother pauses. "How much?" She asks quietly. He shows her the file. She gives a little gasp. I know it's a lot, because I saw the numbers in the light when he handed it to her. The night slowly moves on. A heavy tension in the air seems to be permanently set amongst us.
We're sitting around, it is late, when we hear a knock on the door I run to answer it only to see Mr. Sakimoto and Ren at the doorway. I immediately felt introverted and shy. This was the man that wanted to buy off my home. But Ren was starting to mean a lot to me. "Is your father here?" Mr. Sakimoto asked. He looked down, his eyes peering straight through me. His black hair was turning a slight grey and he had a hardened look overall.
"Yes he's right here." I stepped aside and gestured to where he sat. "If we could talk in private..." Mr. Sakimoto trailed off. "Why do we need your son in this?" My father asked. "He will be taking the head of my company soon, he should be here to see a deal. And even if he doesn't see one today he's staying for one." Mr. Sakimoto replied sharply. My father's eyes peered at him as they left the room. Ren tried to catch my eye but I kept looking down.
I didn't know how to feel about this. I was sure he was going to turn down the offer but what did Mr. Sakimoto mean by Ren would stay here even if he didn't get the hotel? And what would the relationship between his family and mine become? Would my father hate Mr. Sakimoto thus hating the whole family? These questions twirled around my head like a cyclone. I sat there waiting for them to come back. Sometime the voices grew, but they were mostly of my fathers. We were all waiting for him to come back.
And eventually he did. "You're making a mistake. And this is why Ren will stay here!" Mr. Sakimoto yelled loudly as my father walked into the room again. He collapsed down on the chair beside me. A long silence followed after. "We're keeping the Inn." He said. I breathed a sigh of relief. "But we had to settle on a deal. Ren, his son, is going to be staying at the Inn. Mr. Sakimoto thinks that if he waits enough we'll come around." Father continued.
He turned seriously to me. "Neither one of you shall make contact with him, understand? We will give him food and a room but nothing else. They are our enemies now. Do not talk to him, understand?" He said. I couldn't speak, so I gave a small nod. "Good." He said quietly. I headed up the stairs to my room.
I laid my head onto the pillow. "So I can't talk to Ren anymore." I thought. An extreme sadness soaked through me. I never thought that he meant that much to me. "Ren...do you feel the same way?" I whispered. My feelings felt jumbled and I closed my eyes. Small trails of water ran down my cheeks and rolled onto my pillow. "I can't see him anymore." Were my final thought before turning around and falling into a troubled sleep.
