Gemstone Eyes

Chapter 10

Akemi led me out of the festival grounds. We walked in awkward silence, a mad expression on his face. Something about Akemi frightened me a little bit. He was kind and nice but a small part of my mind said to be careful. I had never seen him mad. He stopped at a small clearing and stood still. I extended my hand. "Akemi I don't think that boy meant any harm. I mean, if that's what your upset about..." I trailed off. He gave a long sigh and sat down.

"Come, sit Sayuri-chan. I'm fine." He beckoned over to me. I still hadn't gotten a glimpse of his face and slowly walked towards him, taking a seat. "I'm not sure if we'll see the fireworks from here." I mumbled. "We will. I talked with the operator of them. This should be a perfect spot. You know the legend of course?" He said. Alarms went off in my head as I nodded. "Of course, you are a local after all." Akemi smirked.

"So you must know that if a couple kiss on the last firework of the last night, they are to be together forever." He said. "Well not exactly. They do have to kiss on the last night and the last firework but they aren't destined to be. And of course they do have to be a couple..." I said. "I think I prefer my version better." Akemi replied coldly. The alarms grew louder.

Pop!

My head shot to look at the sky. The last colours of a firework were disappearing. "It looks like they've started." Akemi said. My heart beat quickened and I looked towards him. He was staring at the sky, a smile on his lips. But something seemed harder, harsher in his eyes. I felt his hand on mine and I froze. Minutes passed. "It's ending soon. What do I do!?" I thought. For I knew what Akemi wanted. Something that I never did.

"A kiss."

The thought shot through my head with all the other ones. It stood out more. A last firework flared and I felt him turn to me. His head moved towards mine. "Stop!" I yelled. He didn't...

I jumped up. "Don't touch me." I said, my voice rising. Akemi stood up as well. "Sayuri-chan...I thought you liked me just as much as I liked you." His hand clamped onto my shoulder in a iron-grip. I jerked back. "I don't Akemi." I mumbled now. His eyes flared in anger. "Then you must face the punishment for fooling me, Sayuri-chan." He held his arms around me, trailing my back. I pushed back, out of his grip, turned around and ran.

I would never let him hurt me. My heart belonged to Ren. But what if my feet didn't carry my quick enough? I felt my kimono tear up as I moved my legs. There was no one there to come save me, to find me.

So I ran faster.
