Chapter 4
I couldn’t stop thinking about her. I hoped that she would be all right for the rest of the night. Even Watanuki noticed my stress. “What is it L?” Watanuki said. I sighed. “A girl.” I replied. Watanuki did a sound like “phhh” then looked down. I sighed again. “No Watanuki. I do not have….feelings for her. She just was hurt and I wanted to help. I just hope she’s….oh never mind.” I stopped when Watanuki made the “phhh” sound again. I went upstairs.

The next day I saw Hannah standing at the entrance of the school. But it was odd because she didn’t have Kayla or Melissa with her. “Must be sick.” I thought. And then an idea occurred. Maybe I could ‘hang out’ with her, as the kids say. Almost all the kids here had someone to walk around the break with. I tossed the idea around for the whole morning.
So I did it. During Math I looked at her and wrote down some idea’s for things to do in the short time we had. I turned up with the most oddest answers, some even I scoffed at but it was worth a try. I was going to do it. I was going to ‘hang out’ with Hannah. I was determined to.
Lunch finally came and I approached her table. “So what are we going to do today?” I asked calmly. She stared in shock. “We?” she choked out. “Yeah who else are you going to..ahem hang out with?” I said. “W-well I was just thinking of hanging out under the apple tree.” She replied. “Well you don’t want to be a….loner do you?” I said. I had heard the term before from other kids. She shrugged. “I’m used to it. Kayla and Melissa get sick easily.” She countered. Troubling. “Okay then.” I stood up to leave.
“Wait! Fine I’ll hang out with you.” She said, defeated. I smiled. “Well what are we going to do?” I said again. She talked about studying for something and a presentation, which bored me. “Other then academics.” I said. She looked at me blankly. “You don’t know do you?” I said just to hear her say the words. “No I don’t.” she said. “Well I do! Come on!” I grabbed her and took her away from the cafeteria. “Whoa your fast!” she said. I looked back and smiled.

We went to the apple tree. I looked at her and took the idea’s out of my pocket. “I thought up some idea’s.” I said handing the sheet to her. “Sixty seven idea’s! She said, her eyebrows shooting up. She commented on a few. But I felt those were pretty idiotic as well. I laughed. She gasped.
“What? What is it?” I said urgently, thinking she had hurt herself. “””Oh! Nothing never mind.” She said. Relief poured over me. “Colin?” she asked. I hesitated. “Don’t call me Colin. Call me Lawliet.” I said. I would die soon enough if she were connected to one of my enemy’s. My mistake.
“Lawliet?” she asked quizzically. I looked at her, a small smile playing at my lips. “It was what my mother named me when I was born. My father didn’t like it and called me Colin until he….” I paused. She gasped. “Oh! I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to pry! How are you and your mother doing?” she asked, her face turning red.
“She to died. Along with my father. It was a fire and I was at a friend’s house down the street. I was only six at the time. But to this day I still remember hearing that odd screaming at night. I was never quite sure what it was until my friend’s mother woke me up crying.” I added, seemingly comfortable with the whole topic.
She stared. She seemed frightened. Maybe I shouldn’t have added the screaming part. “W-where do you live now?” she stammered. “ I live with a man named Watanuki. He’s very kind to me.” I said. I looked at her. She was defiantly scared. “Are you okay?” I said soothingly “Yes. Death just frightens me a little bit.” She said. A little? She layed down onto the bright green grass. “I love this place.” She said. “Me too.” I replied. She turned and smiled at me. What a stunning smile it was. So I smiled back.
