Chapter 5
I ‘hanged out’ with Hannah for the rest of the week. Her friends were sick, and I was very grateful to that virus. Hannah became my one and only true friend. I saw many qualities I had never seen in my time as a detective, and that meant a lot to me. She was normal in a spectacular, amazing way.
The tests at the school were easy. I tried hard not to laugh at the other people beside me as they sighed in frustration and bit their pencils. I read the question and the answer popped in my head immediately. Sometimes I pretended to take awhile but other times I just handed in the sheet of paper to the teacher, who would look at me incredulously. I went back and plopped back onto my chair. Hannah glanced at me but turned to her paper.
One day the teacher approached me. “Colin I would like for you to take this test. If you pass this I would be glad to offer you a position in the honors class.” She smiled. I nodded and took the paper. I finished in 5 minutes. All the teacher did was stare.
“Would you like to go in the honors class?” She finally asked. I turned around and looked to the class. “It would be better to be with smarter people.” I thought. I scanned the crowd. I noticed Hannah looking up at me, curious to see what was going on. I winced. “No thank you.” I said shortly. The teacher sighed and nodded. I sat back to my chair. Hannah sighed in relief.

Hannah greeted me at the apple tree. We sat in silence for a bit and then she finally spoke. “So…why did you refuse the honors role offer? It could’ve gotten you to an amazing university. I would’ve died if the teacher has asked me!” She said. I paused. “Should I tell her my reason? Is it safe? What should I do?” I thought. I quickly glanced at her. Minutes passed. “Lawliet?” She finally said. “It just didn’t suit me.” I finally answered. “I couldn’t do it.” I thought.
“How does it not suit you? You’re probably the smartest kid in the school!” She gaped. I looked at her. “I think I’d like to be normal for once.” I said. She looked at me oddly, and I faught the impulse to laugh. I gave in and burst out. “I’ll tell you sometime later.” I said, a smile playing at my lips. “Can I? When the time is right…I will.” I thought.
The bell rang and we went to our next class. I quickly glanced at Hannah and to my surprise I realized she was blushing. “Why is she blushing!? What possible reason…” My thoughts trailed off. She shook her head and I turned mine. “Oh it’s nothing.” She said abruptly, almost to herself. “Hannah…this girl is confusing, much more then any paper.” I though and shrugged.

The subject and I took Hannah home. I did this everyday. It gave some time to talk to her without the annoying glances and stares from the kids at school. I had been doing this the first day we had met under the apple tree, without Kayla and Melissa of course. I enjoyed these long walks. Sometimes I even wish that we would miss the bus just to make it longer.
It ended all to soon and we arrived at her door. I turned to say good-bye. She looked almost in a trance and then she leaned forward and gently wrapped her arms around me. My eyes grew wide. “What is she doing?” I thought nervously. The moment lasted forever. I was in absolute and complete shock. The cherry blossoms seemed to fall in slow motion. Her eyes finally shot open and she stepped back, her face a bright bright red.
“I’m so sorry! I had not idea what came over me! I’m so sorry; I didn’t mean to do that! Sorry!!!” She apologized much more times. I honestly had hardly any idea what had happened, and this odd feeling of enjoyment. There was something else there that I didn’t know. I smiled; it was the only thing I could think to do. “It’s okay…I understand.” I said. We shared one last parting glance and she sped into her house.
My thoughts never left her the whole night.
