The Smiling Demon

Oric lay complacently in a tree that provided just enough brush to conceal his black cat appearance from any onlooker who happened to look into the tree. In truth, the only way one could truly notice him was if they stood directly under the branch he was laying on and looked directly up. Even then, one would only notice the non-continuous swish of the cat’s tail. The smell of the evergreen that flustered into Oric’s senses was both wonderful and disgusting. Suddenly, the sound of brush moving caused the cat’s eyes to snap straight open. Raising his head slowly, the cat stared down at those that were walking under his tree. A mischievous Cheshire cat grin broke across Oric’s face as his eyes continued to follow the figures that were just passing.

It’s certainly been a while since someone has used this road….Oric thought to himself as he stared down at the dirt road that had become more or less rubble over the years. Maybe I should have some fun…. However, just in that moment, the same figure that had passed by just a few seconds prior had come back and was now standing directly under the tree.

Forming into his human form but continuing to lay on the branch, Oric looked down at the messenger who was looking back up at him with a fearful eye. Licking his lips, Oric half smiled at the man who only seemed to turn paler and take a step back. The man who didn’t seem to be willing to accept the idea that both man and demon were thinking at the same time shook his head even more.

“And you are, dear Human?” Oric asked after another lick of his lips. I haven’t eaten human in months….the demon thought to himself as he continued to stare down at the messenger. “How may I help you?”

“I…. the… The Prince has asked me to send you this letter!” the man shouted causing a sudden ringing to hit Oric’s ears.

A hiss escaped the angry demon, and in that moment, he glared down at the human and commenced with his own thoughts. M… heads… yes indeed… Out of human body parts… I love biting off heads first. And also with heads… I really don’t need any sort of salt or spice to go with it… Unlike the spleen or the liver…. Heads were easy to eat….

The man dropped a document and then turned and ran for the hills. Turning his head to watch the special, Oric let out a gleeful laugh. Swinging down from the branch with extreme agility, the demon reached down and took up the parchment in front of him. Reading the human writing, the demon nearly laughed to himself as the meaning became clear.

“The prince wants me? HAH!” Oric let out a sharp crackling laugh that silenced the birds who had only three seconds before racked up as much din as they could possibly make. Oric’s eyes moved back to his tree. “But I do go bored of all this long-lived nothingness….” With that, the demon’s face seemed to take on an almost pained look. “I will at least go see what he wants. Who knows.. I could have my own fun with this in time.” With that, the sudden Cheshire grin that had appeared in his cat from came into the face of Oric residing in his human form. Another sharp laugh broke into his throat as Oric breathed out. “Fun fun fun….”

With that, Oric turned and headed out towards the castle that was breaking out of the tree tops.
