*Human vices
It was late afternoon in the all boys private high school, the students sat in their 11th grade history class. The class listened intently to the lesson that Ms. Clarie went over. She was an energetic women in her late twenties, she loved history and enjoyed teaching the subject very much. A 17 year old boy sat at his desk staring out the window, his head resting in his hand. He had fair skin and dark crimson tresses that framed around his handsome face and hung over his left eye, his eyes were a bright azure that stared off blankly at the blue sky and dead tree’s of the school yard His head pounded, it felt like it was splitting.
“Zain! Zain Kaiser!” Clarie called to him trying to get his attention. Zain shifted his attention to her, she stood over his desk looking down at him.
“If your not going to pay attention then at least act like you are” she informed the class giggled a bit. The scarlet boy sighed and slumped on his desk fully facing her now. She beamed at him and returned to her lesson now that she had his attention. Zain sighed and slumped in his hand again gazing absently at the chalkboard.
The bell rung after a short while and the class was dismissed to lunch. The red head stood up sluggishly from his desk grabbing his bag slinging it over his shoulder as he left with the rest of the class. He then felt a hand smack his shoulder, he snapped out of his daze and stopped turning seeing his good friend Kampfer Valentine. The boy was noticeably smaller then Zain though they both were the same age. Kampfer was thin with porcelain skin and big beautiful green eyes outlined heavily in black. His hair was a raven color. His long side burns and bangs framed around his feminine face and was shorter in the back with soft gelled spikes with crimson tips. He wore a snug feminine yellow sweater with a black bleeding heart on the chest and black skinny jeans.
“Hey! I called you like six times and you didn’t answer” the smaller boy huffed at him. Zain smiled weakly and continued his way towards lunch with Kampfer fallowing right beside him.
“I’m sorry I didn’t hear you” he mumbled sleepily to him. Kampfer looked up and smiled at him childishly.
“Hangover” he chimed. Zain sighed and put his hand to his head as to try and ease his pain though he knew this was useless. “Don’t blame you though, you always get like this after drinking too much liquor” Kampfer sighed pushing it off as if it was nothing. Zain rolled his eyes.
“At least I don’t do abuse prescription drugs” he snapped back weakly. Kampfer grinned.
“Oh! And abusing alcohol is okay?” the raven haired boy shot at him in a teasing tone. “I guess that makes you better then little old me Humm? Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t drinking underage illegal?”
“Your point?” Zain asked annoyed now.
“My point? What I’m doing is perfectly legal, you’re the one with the fake ID” Kampfer finished still smiling.
“Do you always have to criticize everything I do?” Kampfer beamed at him and hugged him childishly causing Zain to stumble a bit.
“Nah! I’m just teasing! I love you to much to be a total jerk!” he beamed squeezing the taller boy’s waist, Zain sighed and placed his hand on the boys head ruffling his soft hair. The two sat outside in the courtyard sitting under a dead looking tree, Zain leaned lazily up against the tree’s trunk his eyelids fluttered as he struggled to stay awake. He was about to drift into a deep sleep when he felt weight press against his shoulder his azure eyes eased open again to see what the weight was, it was none other then Kampfer who had his arms wrapped around Zain’s shoulders, his face inches from Zain’s cheek.
“Hum?” Zain grumbled. Kampfer smiled brightly again.
“Nothing” he mused giggling. The crimson haired boy sighed.
The two boys walked out of the school once they were dismissed. They walked into the parking lot to Zain’s car. Kampfer skipped happily by Zain’s side. “Can I drive?” Kampfer asked when they reached the car. Zain laughed a bit.
“Hell no” the scarlet haired boy pulled his keys out of his pocket unlocking the door to the cab and climbing in. Kampfer fallowed the suit still smiling like a child.
“No need to be snippy” Zain pulled out of the lot and headed towards Zain’s house. “Hey aren’t you dropping me off at home?” he asked.
“No, cause I know you well enough to know what you want” he said smugly.
“Do you now?” Kampfer pressed. “Well dummy I wanted to go to my house first and get some drinks” he smirked. Zain made a face and quickly made a U turn jerking the car around, Kampfer cheered. “Do that again!”
“No” he said simply. “What all do you have at your house?” Zain pressed. Kampfer thought about it.
“I know it’s booze and I think we have some wine too” he said thoughtfully.
Kampfer raided through his fridge. His father wasn’t home yet so the house was empty, Zain waited impatiently in the doorway. “Hurry up” The boy ordered to Kampfer who was in the kitchen.
Kampfer stumbled out of the kitchen with some bottles in his arms.
“Don’t just stand there help me!” Zain rolled his eyes and took some of the bottles from the smaller boy, the two walked out to the car and placed the bottles carefully in the back seat of the car. Zain studied one of the bottles.
“You dad has strange taste what’s blue dog?” he asked. Kampfer opened the car door to the passenger side.
“It’s wine I think” he answer slowly. Zain shrugged and placed it back in the car slamming the door shut and walking around to the drivers side. “Did you know that the distillation of alcohol can be traced back to China and Central Asia and the Middle East?”
“What?” Zain asked. Kampfer sat in the seat holding a blue bottle. He was apparently reading the label on the bottle.
“It says so right here” he explained pointing to the bottles label. “Muslim chemist’s--”
“Yeah, yeah” he huffed annoyed taking the bottle from him to look at it as he drove down the rode. “Fun facts?” he asked reading the label. Kampfer shrugged. “I guess I’ll have fun with that when I’m drunk” he scoffed putting the bottle in the back seat. Kampfer smirked.
“Like you can read when your drunk” he teased. “Alcohol has short and long term effects” the gothic boy bemused. Zain rolled his eyes.
“Neither can you” Kampfer smiled at him.
“I don’t get drunk like you do”
Zain flopped on his couch propping his feet up on the coffee table. He watched Kampfer from his spot on the couch who was putting the liquor in the fridge, Zain popped open a beer and took a swig of the amber liquid in the bottle as Kampfer made his way up the stair to the bathroom. He could hear him up stairs in the medicine cabinet, Zain got up and walked up the stairs turning into the bathroom. Kampfer was kneeling in the sink since he wasn’t tall enough to reach the cabinet on his own . He carefully went through the white cabinet picking out bottle to look at them then place them back in.
“What’s Valium?” Kampfer asked looking at a pill bottle. Zain took another sip of his drink and leaned on the doorframe.
“Valium? It’s a prescription drug. It’s a benzodiazepine derivative drug. It’s used for treating anxiety, insomnia, seizures, alcohol withdrawal, and muscle spasms” Zain explained while Kampfer looked over the bottle. “It’s my mothers” he sighed. Kampfer opened the bottle and looked inside at the solid white crystals inside, he stuck his finger in and touched the pills then he put his finger in his mouth. “Careful that has some nasty side effects” Zain warned him.
“It’s kinda bitter tasting” he informed him closing the bottle again to look over the label. “Barbiturate?”
“Right. Valium is a benzodiazepine drug. Barbiturates are drugs that act as a central nervous system depressants, it’s the type of drug that Valium is” he explained. “there pills that you ingest orally”
“Any side effects?” Kampfer asked him.
“From mild sedation to anesthesia” Zain said taking another drink from the bottle that was now half empty. “It can be long term, short term, or intermediate” Kampfer put the bottle away.
“Tranquilizers is classified as a barbiturate too right?”
“Yes in a way, there a sedative drug. It’s a substance that depresses the central nervous system resulting in calmness, relaxation, sleepiness, slowed breathing, and reduction of anxiety, it can be swallowed in the form of a pill of injected through a needle” Zain explained. “But the needle part is usually for much higher doses, it too has short term and long term effects” Kampfer looked like he was deep in though for a moment before sighing and placing the medicine back in the cabinet. He then hopped down from the sink closing the cabinet. Zain raised an eyebrow questioningly.
“Your not going to take any?” Kampfer shook his head.
“I’ll make you a deal I won’t abuse prescription drugs if you don’t drink in access” the smaller boy offered. Zain sighed.
“Sure sure. I’m hungry what do you want to eat?” Zain asked.
“Lets make cookies!!” he beamed. Zain sighed and smiled a bit.
“Sure”
