A Little Crush

~Mai~

I was walking with Aki to school and we spotted Takumi and Haru screwing around by a rail. Takumi jumped up on it and I held my breath, but he walked on it like it was just another sidewalk. He’s being extra reckless as of late. I thought. “Hey, come on.” Aki said as I started to slow down.

“Sorry.” I caught up with her and opened my mouth when she shushed me.

“…building outside of town to see what’s in it?” I heard Takumi say loudly. That’s right, that’s today isn’t it? Haru turned his head fast, making his hair hit the side of his face, and he pushed on Takumi. He fell, well, gracefully, and did his signature hand spring. He laughed. Such a show off. I thought as I smiled a little.

“Did you have sugar this morning?” I asked.

“Well no, why do you ask Mai?” Takumi said glancing around at us.

“Aren’t you supposed to be emo or something?” Aki said sarcastically. He pulled the skin under his eye down and stuck his tongue out at Aki.

“Takumi…” I said quietly. He immediately looked at me and blinked.

“What’s up Mai?” I felt my stomach flip, and I fiddled with my hair.

“You’re going to smudge your eyeliner if you keep doing that.” I said.

“It’s alright I don’t care I can fix it when we get to school.” He said simply. He had a chunk of black missing from under his eye and I couldn’t stop staring at it. His eyes are so pretty…

“And Takumi…” I let slip out.

“Yea?” He said. I blinked and looked away.

“It’s nothing never mind.” I muttered.

“Oh alright then.” He bounced away.

“We’re going to be late to school if we don’t get going.” I looked at Aki and Haru.

“How about we race Haru the last one to the school has to go into the building first.” Takumi suggested. Haru moved fast and threw Takumi back, and I was close to reaching out to catch him, when he leaned forward and sprinted off.

“That’s cheating!” He yelled.

“Really, how immature can you get?” Aki muttered as she brushed past me.

“Y-Yeah.” I stuttered.

“Come on, let’s go, I sure as hell am not going in that creepy place first.” She laughed and then took off. I don’t really want to either, but I guess Since I’m usually the slowest… I jogged after her and I saw Haru jumping up and down by the school entrence and Takumi looking quite sour. Aki got to them and turned and pointed at me. “HA HA HA! YOU GET THE PLEASURE OF GOING IN FIRST!” She teased. I got to them and looked away. “I was just kidding.” Aki said. I looked at her.

“Really?” I asked.

“No, I was kidding about kidding.” She laughed and Haru smacked Aki in the back of the head. In response, Haru got a punch in the stomach. “What did you do that for you jerk?!” She huffed.

“I could ask you the same thing!” He shot back. While those two continued I pulled out a small mirror from my backpack.

“Here.” I said quietly as I held it up for Takumi.

“Uh, actually, I don’t have any liner with me.” He scowled. I pulled mine out and handed it to him. “You’re prepared for everything!” He said as he opened it up and took the mirror. He sat it on the window sill and carefully fixed the smudges. I watched him. Why I liked him so much was beyond me. He finished and then looked at me strangely. “What is it?” He asked. I shook my head.

“Nothing.” I answered.

“Ok, why don’t we all go in now?” he suggested. I nodded and pulled on Haru’s ponytail.

“Lets go you two.” I said.

“Alright.” Haru crossed his arms and Aki pouted.

“Fine.” She said.
