Nightmares, Past and Present

Dark clouds of smoke rose through the sky, fueled by the countless buildings burning in a devastated city. The streets ran wild with terrified people, screaming as they scrambled from collapsed structures and violent explosions. A brief image of panicked ants came to mind as he looked down. His eyes searched frantically for his home, numerous deep craters had drastically altered the land making it near to impossible to recognize where he once lived. Only when he made his descent from the air was he able to identify it. It was reduced to half its size with an imploded roof but it still retained most of its dome shape. He dashed through an opening in a cracked wall and yelled out her name. The blaring sirens of the compound made it difficult to hear her. He called out again as he ran down a long hallway. He heard her call back to him further up ahead. He made a left turn after a few doorways and found her. She was pinned beneath a fallen contraption of hers. He lifted it easily and pulled her up. She had a few cuts on her arms and face but was ultimately ok. They both made it halfway through the long hallway when he stopped abruptly. There were two of them, they were strong, just as strong as him maybe, and they were coming from either side of them in the hallway. He raised both hands, arms length on both sides of him, ready to attack when necessary. She was in front of him glancing anxiously right then left down the hallway, they were getting closer. Just before he was about to attack, she lurched toward him, almost causing him to lose his balance. He glared down at her in aggravation for an instant then noticed her eyes. They were wide with surprise. Her mouth was partially opened; a thin stream of blood trickled from the corner. She stared at him, her eyes fresh with tears. He looked down and saw a metal claw protruding from below her ribcage. The wall behind her fell apart and she was wrenched away from behind into the sky.

Bura’s eyes snapped opened and she sprung to all fours, effectively startling Raditz out of his sleep.
“Guh..! W-what the hell is the matter with you?!” he asked groggily. She didn’t answer him. She didn’t even hear him. The pounding of her heart was so loud she thought it was in her ears. Her stomach gave a heave and she crawled away from him as fast as she could toward the tree across from them. Raditz started to call out to her but was interrupted by the sound of her retching.
“Hey…you ok?” he asked with concern. He was answered by more retching and Bura moaning. She pulled her self away from her dispelled sickness and laid on her side, her back to him. He could hear her moaning slightly each time she exhaled.
“Damn it…” he cursed under his breath as he stood up and walked toward her.
“Raditz, what’s that brat’s problem,?!” Nappa growled as he staggered toward the two.
“I don’t know, she just woke up all of a sudden and barfed”. Raditz knelt beside Bura and felt the top of her head. She cringed away from him,
“…ngh! You’re freezing!”
“What are you talking about?! You’re burning up!”
“Is that all?!” Nappa grabbed Bura by the back of her armor, “You’re lucky I know how to fix that!” He took to the sky, Bura dangling in his grip with Raditz following from behind,
“Hey…you know what you’re doing, right?”
“Just shut up and let me handle this”.
Nappa led them to a large lake and stopped just above the surface,
“One quick brat cool down coming up!” he smirked as he dropped Bura into the water, causing her to make a belly flop on the surface before sinking below. Raditz stared at the surface, growing more and more unconvinced each second that this method wasn’t helping. She wasn’t bursting from the lake and sputtering like he was expecting. Instead, she quietly re-emerged at the surface still face down in the water and not moving. It was at that time that Raditz suggested getting Bura some medical attention.
