I know what the box art says, just the European boxart is boring and name changes are pretty common in localisations.
Released in 1998, Fighters Destiny was an unusual take on the fighting game genre as it uses a points system based on whether you Knockdown, Counter, Timeout, Ringout, Throwdown or Special Move which if you see Olympic Martial Arts is similar to that scoring system where better move execution scores higher points. You can also learn new moves in the master mode and even fight a Cow.
It's development title was "Struggle Hard"
Pros
Fantastic music.
Learning new techniques gives the game more depth.
Joker is the most intense opponent you'll ever fight.
Mechanics work surprisingly well.
Some of the specials are incredible.
Cons
Very unimaginative fighter roster.
You'll be punished very quickly for trying the easy method every time.
The sequel made no innovations and has an even worse fighter roster.
No story modes or endings.
Verdict
With a bit more care it would've succeeded, where it lacks is it's poorly designed characters apart from Ushi the Cow, Joker and Master. Also I would love to see the concept of learning new moves come back in fighting games.
Were at the home stretch now of our Advent style review season.
Released in 1989, Golden Axe is a side scrolling beat em up set in a highly stylised fantasy setting. A Barbarian, an Amazon and a Dwarf have all lost a loved one at the hands of the tyrannical Death Adder who desires the Golden Axe to rule over the land, very basic fantasy plot, nothing else needed.
Fantasy artist Boris Vallejo was responsible for much of the franchises promo art.
Pros
The lore and setting of Golden Axe is pretty good.
Of all the side scrollers thia is the easiest to play.
Quite generous with pick ups.
Cons
A bit short.
Hit detection can be pretty bad depending on port.
Those little hobbits are annoying to hit.
Verdict
One of those games that you don't forget yet you likely haven't played it for years.
Here's a treat for you, this is the first game I ever bought.
Released in 1992, Tiny Toon Adventures Babs Big Break is part of a surprisingly high number of games from the Tiny Toons franchise. You play Buster, Plucky and Hamton as you battle to save the theatre so Babs can be a star.
Despite being in the title, Babs is not playable.
Pros
Fits in most of the cast.
Has some decent mini games.
Character switch is a nice touch.
Cons
Supposed to be Babs game yet she's not playable.
Easily get caught in a deadend if you don't know where to find helper characters.
Verdict
Won't be the last game I cover from the franchise.
With this title, most people forget it was part of the franchise, still trying to figure out why.
Obviously released in 2001, Daytona USA 2001 was the first in the franchise to be specifically designed for console release. Featuring 8 tracks, secret cars along with circuit configurations for reverse and mirrored, it's the most complete version of the game to date.
Sega accidentally killed the online servers for this game through poor coding.
Pros
Plenty of content, more than any other Daytona title.
Music is still amazing.
More than enough cars to cater to every playstyle.
Cons
Most if not all players will still drive Hornet even if other cars are faster.
The botched online mode means that online multiplayer is non existent.
Verdict
I love this game but then again I'm a sucker for arcade racers.
Going a little off schedule but it's nothing major.
Released in 1988, RC Pro-AM is Rare's first attempt at a racing game; you are competing in the RC Pro-AM for Remote Control cars and the object of the game is to avoid last place all the while picking up upgrades and power ups, it's also one of the earliest racing games to use weapons.
The planned N64 version became Diddy Kong Racing
Pros
Makes full use of the NES hardware limits
Hugely innovative for future racing games
Was the main reason Nintendo partnered with Rare
Cons
No multiplayer
Tracks lose appeal after a while
Higher levels have unfair AI
Verdict
It's place in gaming history was more showing Nintendo what Rare was capable of rather than the game being really good. It's at least capable enough to keep you entertained.
