the GazettE

A Comet on its way to Europe

Like an unstoppable comet, „the GazettE“ is now rushing towards Europe. The Band, which has been founded in 2002, and which counted to one of the most famous indies Bands, changed their label in 2003 and is now labelled under PS Company where also Major Bands like Kagrra and Miyavi are signed. Now, they want to conquer Europe as a Major Band.

Since February, the GazettE are touring throughout Japan, almost every of the 33 shows were sold out. They even played in Nihon Bodoukan, one of the largest halls in Japan, in front of 9000 Fans. They show their whole skills in mixing different styles together. Unfortunately, this seems to be too chaotic to some people. Ruki’s unmistakable voice gives the whole thing a characteristic sound. The change between the pitches seems to be very easy for him. Especially Reita’s unique basslines and Ruki’s singing are creating a special atmosphere.

This atmosphere is what Ruki (Vocal), Reita (Bass), Kai (Drums), Aoi and Uruha (Guitar) want to make us feel on their two first and only concerts in Europe on the Animagic 2006 in Bonn. In front of up to 2000 people in total, they will show us their skills on the 29. and 20. of July in the Brückenforum in Bonn.

On the Animagic 2006, there will be a Handshake Event where choosen Fans can meet the Band and where there will be surprises. More under rockidentity.de

Just before the live on July, 14, the first Major Album “NIL” was released Europe-wide through CLJ Records. Additionally, a limited special edition of NIL with extras, limited to 1500 copies, was released. The Japanese Version of that CD is already sold out.

Similar to their previous records, the diversity of the choosen music styles is varying. Amongst others, Ballad-like songs like “D.L.N.” and “Cassis” can be found. But also, there are Songs were Guitars and heavy melodies play a main role. The single “Cassis” is so popular in Japan that is used as an opening for one of the most famous television shows.

The Visual Kei Band shows its comprehensive ideas on their album “NIL” not only music-wise. Their with much effort created outfits and their styling matches the music and emphasizes it.

People who don’t know Gazette yet or do not have been convinced yet should really have a sample listen to “NIL”. Because the stylistically varying Album is much fun listening to and wakes hunger for more.

Chatting with the GazettE

Peach: Welcome to Bonn! Is this your first time in Germany?

Aoi: We have only been to Frankfurt am Main before for a very short period of time and then we travelled to Austria where we shoot a PV [Cassis]. We didn’t get to see a lot of Germany back then. Unfortunately, we also missed the FIFA World Cup.

Uruha: However, this is our first real stay in Germany and first of all, our first concert here.

Kai: But Bonn is cool! We saw the Beethoven-Haus yesterday. When the Concerts are over, we want visit some more of the city.

Peach: Your first concert will take place tomorrow. Are you nervous yet?

Ruki: Yes, definitely. We are pretty nervous.

Peach: Why will there be only 2 concerts?

Ruki: We are not against more concerts but maybe two are enough for a start. If everything will turn out well, we will definitely come back. And then also perform in other European countries.

Peach: Be honest: What is it like for you to perform on an Anime Convention?

Aoi: Well, it is a little bit weird indeed. In Japan, we have never done something like this before. Our music has got nothing to do with mangas and animes. But on the other hand: Why not!? It is nice that in germany, this is not seen so narrow. In Japan, the music scene is way more categorizised and closed-minded. So an event like the Animagic is a refreshing variety then. Our motto is: Music is music, therefore there should not be any boundaries or intolerance.

Peach: You said that nicely! How about your look? Other bands like Dir en grey or MUCC have dismissed their Style by now. Is there any chance we will see you without Make up by any time soon?

Uruha: We don’t like to compare ourselves to other bands very much. We are totally self-contained and have got our own style. Of course the visual aspect is important to us because it belongs to the music and the whole product. Our look depends on the creative phase we are currently in and also on the current record we are making. Therefore, we can not say what will be in the future.

Peach: Tell us a little bit about everyday life. How do you work together, how does a song of you come into existence?

Ruki: Well, that differs a lot and depends on the mood of every single band member. Often the news on TV or situations in daily life inspire us.

Peach: Talking about inspiriation. What does your band name actually mean?

Reita: Oh, that is not easy to explain because “GazettE” is no actual word. It is more like a sound. If the tape in a recorder messes up and you pull it out afterwards, this sound sounds a little bit like “Gazette”. In Germany, one might feel this sound differently.

Peach: Does the capital “E” in GazettE also has got a meaning?

Ruki: No, not really! That’s just design.

Peach: You were in different bands before, right?

Aoi: True. Uruha, Ruki and Reita were in one band, Kai and me in another one. However, we have been friends by that time and some day, we decided to make our own band.

Peach: So does that mean that you are all very good friends in private life?

Ruki: Yes, almost like a family. We spend a lot of time together after all. We work all the time and don’t have much leisure time, so we kind of have to spend time with each other. But just like in a family, there is disagreement sometimes, too.

Peach: What are your musical role models?

Aoi: We like Luna Sea and X-Japan very much.

Peach: These are great role models indeed. What do you want to express with your music?

Ruki: We do not have a certain message. It is more like we are born to make music. It is our most important way to express ourselves, to tell stories, to give people something. It is just our language.

Peach: Will you tell who you are behind your façade? Who are you in private life?

Uruha: the GazettE is a very important part of our lives, but of course we do have different private lives and hobbies. I for myself busy myself with video cutting and like to make movies on the PC.

Kai: I love to play Videogames.

Ruki: For me, shopping is the greatest thing.

Reita: I like biking very much and I drive around a lot with my motorcycle.

Aoi: And I like to drink. Am I allowed to say that?

Peach: Are you still in contact with your former friends or classmates?

Ruki: Unfortunately not very much. Work does not leave much time for that.

Peach: But you have had time to do this interview. We thank you very much for that. Good luck and success in the future!
