Art Material of the Day: Pen

Today's art material is the Pen!! The pen is a useful tool when it comes to comic art and manga. Most professional manga artists use dip style pens (calligraphy pens) for their work. The most commonly used dip style pens are the Crow quill and the G pen. On the other hand, some artists also prefer to use multi liner pens because of the various sizes and colors available.
Comparison:

Strong points of a dip style pen: varied sizes in strokes, nicer variations, lasts for a long time, and usually is able to replace nibs.

Weak points of a dip style pen: The main weak point is how expensive it is to invest in a dip style pen. everything comes separate usually and your bill adds up to huge amount after having to buy the ink, holder, and nibs. The dip style pen is also very hard to use, it takes a lot of practice to get used to.

Strong points of a multi liner pen: Varied sizes in nibs, easy control, does not to be dipped in in constantly, lines dry fast, you do not have to buy the ink separate, and is less expensive.

Weak points: May run out of ink, can bleed, not to many varied sizes in one line, may not have as good as a grip as dip style pen.

Multi liner pens of recommendation:

. Pilot pen: has a very good ink flow, should be used on thicker paper to avoid bleeding though.
. Faber-Castle: Comes in S, XS, M, F, and B in many different colors.
. HI-TEC- C pen: Another pen that is made by pilot and has the smallest pen nib in the world! Great for details and fine lines but should be used on smooth paper instead of grainy so that the nib will not snag.
. Pigma Micron Pens: Comes in many different sizes. I recommend sizes 02, 01, and 005 for nice thin lines in variation.

Paper Corner:
Any paper will work with pens but I would say it would be a good idea to use smooth paper to grainy ones such as sketch book paper to preserve the nibs and have smother lines.

Paper of Recommendation:

. Copy Paper
. Back of Manuscript Paper
. Thick smooth art papers.

Ok, Hope this helps
Thanks!
